An old fashioned camp fire gathering for visiting veterans and city soldiers was held Saturday at the Second U P Church. Chairman Wheeler Gardner of the 25th Town led the meeting with Rev. W News of the 1st Ohio Navy Brigade delivering a short speech.
Former Japanese premier Count Okuma, noted as a shrewd statesman, recently stated in an interview that Japan must be the arbiter of affairs in the far east. Despite great wealth, he lives simply in a Tokyo home less pretentious than many American summer cottages.
Chicago on May 27 reports the fiftieth day of the strike with rising unrest. Forty-two arrested after a pitched battle with police at Madison Street bridge as mobs attacked lumber wagons. Officers led by Lt. O'Connor dispersed rioters at Ashland avenue and West Twenty-second Street. several convictions and bonds set for participants.
Mayor Dunne heard no peace moves as the Associated Building Trades prepared to meet on whether members would use unfair lumber. Master-in-Chancery Sherman and Attorney Mayer questioned President Shea and James Barry about past life links to the strike. Shea and Barry invoked privilege to avoid incriminating replies. News from Tokio and St. Petersburg report Vice Admiral Rojestvensky's fleet sighted off Tashima islands in the Korea Strait. Many in Russia jubilant believing defeat of Togo possible while others foresee a stern chase toward Vladivostok if elusion occurred.
Baron Alphonse de Rothschild head of the Paris house and Bank of France governor dies of acute bronchitis worsened by gout. Born 1827, term as head passes to Baron Lambert de Rothschild. Earlier anarchist attacks injurious in 19th century. secretary lost fingers and an eye from a bomb attempt.
The May 27 sessions of the Presbyterian general assembly at Winona Lake Ind debated forms of service and the Book of Prayers, sending the report to an enlarged committee. They censured tobacco use and liquor access at colleges and discussed campus liquor issues amid a heated floor. A separate Pontiac Mich fire report notes a misoline bottle on the second floor of Barbour Blaylock grocery surviving flames that damaged a four foot wide area per floor.
Justice Maddox in Brooklyn Supreme Court grants Franklin B. Lord motion to restrain Keyquitable Life Assurance directors from mutualizing the company. The order limits the restraining to the filing and execution of the proposed amended charter adopted by the board.
Lafayette Indiana marks its 8th year on a May 27 anniversary. The town, once among the first in the region, now ranks ninth in state standings. It was named for the Marquis de Lafayette by pioneer William Digby who platted the city on May 25 1825.
Speaker Cannon leaves Chicago with a congressional party bound for Portland to speak at the opening of the Lewis and Clark exposition. Afterward the group will tour Alaska for six weeks to study conditions there.
Rochelle TfL May 27 A rear-end crash on the Chicago Burlington and Quincy line killed brakeman G.8. Clark and severely injured engineer O. E. Murray and fireman T. W. Flock. Clark rode with Murray and Flock when their engine struck a preceding train leaving a siding. The locomotive overturned and freight cars toppled on both sides.

A Post Office Department bulletin notes Chicago leads United States cities in free delivery area with 192 square miles served by 1,571 carriers, while New York with Brooklyn covers 12 square miles by 2,004 carriers. It also lists states with more free delivery post offices than Illinois, including Pennsylvania Ohio and Massachusetts.
Walter Shively of Chicago was captured at Crawfordsville after a 44 mile pursuit in a large touring car. Three detectives pursued for about three hours, during which Shively allegedly took the car and attempted to return to Citeage.
The Chicago market notes show hogs with estimated receipts around 1000 yesterday and 2577 today, prices for light, mixed, and shipping grades. cattle and sheep receipts are listed with steady to slightly higher expectations. Pigs and porkers price ranges appear, along with rough and shipping grade distinctions, and overall market tone remains steady to higher than yesterday.
London May 27 A dispatch from Shanghai cited by the Associated Press said five Russian volunteer fleet steamers three collier ships and one cruiser arrived off Woosung near the Yangtze mouth. The cruiser then sailed away and three vessels proceeded to Woosung. The report may exaggerate a larger Russian concentration near Woosung. No other news alters these facts.
Dispatch from General Lineviteh to the tsar describes Lieutenant General Mistchenko leading a mixed detachment of South Caucasian brigade troops Baikal Cossacks against Japanese and Chinese forces. They burned depots destroyed telegraph lines captured soldiers and horses and took five officers and 234 men as prisoners.
