Cable reports a landing party repairing the Escalante cable was treacherously attacked by natives. Captain George H. Tilley of the Signal Corps is missing with worst fears. No other signal corps casualties reported amid the Manila campaign.
Havana reports 111 applicants for shares in the U S gratuity to Cuban troops. 30 awarded $75 each. Rolls are deemed unreliable with many dead or unverified names. Lt Col George Randall notes numerous fictitious entries and a cabal tried to deter accepting the gift.
The Presbyterian assembly in Minneapolis adjourned after a harmonious session. A single overture will be sent to 229 presbyteries, proposing a new chapter for Book of Discipline. Trustees report $81,447.43 on hand, up $126,153.22, and staff salaries rise from $2,709 to $4,000.
Joliet Illinois May 2 Willam Garrett of Cleveland formerly superintendent of the Tilinvis Steel focal rod mill and inventor of the Garrett rolls visited Joliet last week to arrange the construction of a large rod mill at the McKenna steel plant. Worn rails will be rerolled into billets and then steel rods.
Pennsylvania dominates finals taking nine of thirteen events in New York. A C Kranzlein excels in hurdles and sets a world record 24 feet 4 inches in the running broad jump.
Secretary and Mrs. Alger left Washington and traveled to Thorndale Pennsylvania to spend a few days with their daughter.
A Nebraska cyclone devastated farms near Minden Hartwell and Kenesaw causing seven deaths and multiple injuries. Homes barns and stock were destroyed while residents sought shelter in cellars or furrows. Weather damage extended to Wisconsin Iowa and surrounding areas with heavy rain hail and train delays reported.
A Wisconsin storm weekend dropped heavy rain and hail across Chippewa and Eau Claire counties. Two miles of the Wisconsin Central track washed out at Howard, traffic suspended, and bridges and telegraph lines damaged. Echoes of water and hail damaged property, bridges, and log flume sections.
Rock Island Illinois May 29 resolutions adopted by employees condemn any move to divert appropriations from the government plan to close Rock Island arsenal. They demand Major Stanhope Eliant retain command and protest delays in negotiations led by James O Connell. If no War Department decision soon, organized labor vows action to shift funds away from the post.
Milwaukee May 29 Wisconsin's delegation to congress ten members will support David Henderson of Iowa in the coming speakership contest. The conference at Hotel Nister Saturday evening showed a near split between Henderson and Hopkins with Henderson leading on the first ballot. New York May 29 three citizens abroad must pay New York taxes despite residence abroad. William Waldorf Astor, the Bradleys, and Mrs. Tiaue Sherman face personal property taxes on up to 2.5 million value. Mich May 29 Berrien county farmers threaten lynching Harry Smith arrested for assault on daughter of Charles Derran. Sheriff claims Smith confessed. jail heavily guarded amid possible mob. Clinton Ia May 29 C Ruffner sues Calamas town for 10000 for injuries from a defective walk on March 16.
Peter Phelan died in New York from the effects of drinking excessive tea. Mrs. Mary E. Russell of Wataga Illinois sues her mother for 25000 dollars for slander. Governor Roosevelt plans to attend the Rough Riders reunion at Las Vegas New Mexico on June 24. A patent leather trust is forming in New Jersey with about 25000000 dollars capital. The snow blockade on the South Park railway in Colorado began January 21 and was raised Saturday. Mark Twain plans to return to England in June and will be dined by the Authors' club on June 12.
Train No. 6 on the Burlington line hit a fifty foot washout two miles north of Washburn. Sixteen injured, none seriously, many released to Cedar Rapids hospitals. Fatalities include William McLaughlin and conductor George Wainwright among others. one bridegroom-to-be died en route to Minneapolis after the wreck.
Champaign Illinois May 20 saw twenty five society girls in bicycle costume parading from morning to night for Champaign's annual trolley day raising funds for Julia F Burnham hospital. Street cars crowded with fans as two brass bands toured the lines and a progressive euchre contest at West End park drew many society women. Proceeds filled the hospital treasury. Sioux City Iowa May 29 marked the sixth annual meeting of United Commercial Travelers of America Minnesota and the Dakotas with a banquet and ball in Duluth chosen for next year. Joliet Illinois May 29 Curtis Brainard resigns as internal revenue collector. John A Grant expected to succeed. Brooklyn Handicap at Gravesend May 29 Banaster wins by five lengths time 2064 winner receives 8000.
