Washington Jaycees welcomed Memorial Day travelers with coffee and doughnuts at the armory. About 150 travelers stopped for the hospitality. Craig Arbuckle and the National Guard supplied the armory and support. Dennis Day and Tom McAvoy assisted to ensure the project’s success.
A new Dubuque rescue crew and boat saved six people and their marooned boat near the spillway gates at Lock and Dam No 11 on the Mississippi River. The motor sailed boat owned by Roger McNamara was pulled toward the spillway by a strong undertow, and the craft were towed to a nearby marina.
Several hundred youngsters in Spokane joined a giant dessert stunt at the Spokane Baptist Temple. The event produced a 300 foot long banana split using 60 gallons of ice cream, 80 pounds of bananas, four cans of chocolate syrup and 24 cans of whipped cream.
Mrs Margaret Butter city councillor in Oxford wrote a tax check on a paving stone to protest plans to pave a main shopping street. Bank declined cashing the check citing an unsatisfactory signature.

Mrs. Joe H. Jones of Washington is listed among 27 Iowa Republicans named to the Republican State Platform Committee today. A break in at Krantz Barber Shop on the square yielded 26 in change, discovered Monday and reported to police. Hazel Deal at 627 East Main Street reported a stray slug that pierced an awning, screen and window and rested on a bed inside her home.
United Press International reports Memorial Day weekend traffic deaths total 390, the lowest since 1960 and well below prior forecasts. National Safety Council spokesman Ron Kuykendall cites lower speeds and reduced travel, with possible double Memorial days in states affecting counts. Final tally by region shows 390 traffic deaths, plus 15 drownings and 55 from other causes.
The Supreme Court said Nixon's attorneys must file by Thursday an expedited answer to Jaworski's request for an early ruling on access to White House tapes and documents. Justice Rehnquist did not participate. the case centers on 64 subpoenaed conversations and could affect the Watergate trial set for Sept. 9.
Heavy weekend rain drenched Washington County delaying field work and holiday plans. The official 24 hour rainfall reached 1.62 inches with additional showers after, totaling 2.64 inches in three days. Flooding occurred along Long Creek as both forks rose into saturated lowlands.
Des Moines Iowa Governor Robert D Ray returned from a 10 day China tour with five other governors saying the United States must keep its word to improve relations and that China wants cautious progress toward potential peaceful coexistence and possible trade pacts He noted Chinese officials desire steady, long term engagement and warned against expansionist suspicions while criticizing Nixon era moves toward renewed diplomatic ties
Watergate prosecutor Leon Jaworski asked Judge Sirica to order disclosure of a Sept 15 1972 Oval Office meeting tape and Haldeman notes. He argues the material could show White House efforts to audit or harass Nixon enemies and may reveal conspiratorial aims tied to Watergate investigations and possible civil rights violations.
Governor Ray indicated he will sign by Thursday a bill providing consumer protection and raising ceilings on charge accounts in Iowa. He said about 45 pieces of legislation await his signature and plans to sign the remaining bills, including the consumer credit code, soon.
President Nixon told Congress that cost of living could rise faster if inflationary policy is pursued. The three member Council of Economic Advisers forecast year end inflation near 7 percent, with unemployment around 5 percent and output improving after a five month decline.
