Two small Illinois corn areas tested positive for Southern Corn Leaf Blight as USDA reports. Extension Director Jim Frier notes infections limited so far this year with no Iowa corn infected per A H Epstein. Wind carried spores from shelling near prior year corn. farmers urged to delay shelling and harvest in calm or light drizzle to reduce spread.
The Iowa Senate approved a measure to allow 65-foot double bottom trucks to operate unlimited distances on four lane highways. Gov. Ray criticized the move, calling it special interest legislation, while Sen. Tom Riley fended off the bill as dangerous and opposed by most Iowans. The present limit is 60 feet. The measure’s floor manager, Sen. John Walsh, argued the longer trucks would boost the state's economy by retaining industry.
State lawmakers debate a bill to align trucking rules with surrounding states. proponents say industry needs the update to prevent losses to out of town business. Five double bottom trucks were cited as having been involved in accidents last year. Senate Majority Leader Clifford Lamborn of Maquoketa backs the measure, noting public unfamiliarity with double bottom trucks.
Senate leaders defeated five amendments proposed by Senator Riley to kill or weaken the trucking bill. The chamber also rejected Senator Milligan’s bid to defer action until next week. Governor voiced basic opposition to the long track bill and highlighted priority for reorganizing the Iowa Liquor Commission, creating a general services department, and consolidating environmental agencies.
The Iowa House backed a broad home rule package by an 82 to 2 vote, aiming to grant cities power to govern most affairs not reserved by the legislature. The bill, opposed by some Republicans, is not expected to advance in the Senate this session and would take effect January 1973.
Washington (UPI) The FDA says it is sharpening practices and removing political and economic pressures that harmed consumer protection. Commissioner Edwards notes taxpayers would need to double the agency budget to satisfy the advisory panel, which cites random inspections, low morale, secrecy, and a poor reputation as broader failings. The panel’s 50 recommendations call for science based decisions and better use of scientists’ advice.
In Yuba City deputies uncover 20 bodies at a crude riverbank cemetery and peach orchard sites tied to farm labor contractor Juan Corona. Police say two dozen victims were killed with a machete or cleaver as authorities press the search while officials released limited identifications.
A train carrying about 100 local children returning from a school outing collided head on with a freight locomotive near Radevormwald West Germany. At least 47 people were killed including children teachers and the driver. Another 28 were injured many seriously. The first car was crushed and the second car derailed on a single line stretch near the town. Continued on page 8.

Three white men, Wayne Parks 23, Wes ley Parks 26, and Allen Wilkerson 19, were jailed on murder charges after Jostha Collier 18 was shot in Drew Mississippi. FBI joined inquiry on possible federal violation as protests erupted in Drew and Ruleville with no violence reported. Prosecutor Crosthwait plans grand jury action June 7 in Sunflower County.
Eight people connected to Johnson County government and outside firms were indicted by a Johnson County grand jury for alleged bid and contract misconduct. Indictments followed a study by University of Iowa graduate student Robert Bartel, who also serves as Sharon Township justice of the peace. The panel warned officials against accepting gifts or benefits from county deal makers.
Russia and Egypt signed a 15 year treaty pledging more arms and instructors to aid Egypt against Israeli aggression. Podgorny and Sadat announced the pact in Cairo after talks stressing a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
