History and Teachings of the Evangelical Synod of North America
The German Evangelical Church Association of the West formed in 1840 to unite Lutherans and Reformed settlers in the new world. It defined Evangelical Church by scriptural authority, rejected sectarianism, and focused on salvation by faith in Jesus Christ. Over decades it became the Evangelical Synod of North America, pursuing unity with other German-founded bodies and targeting a merger with the Reformed Church in the United States within two years. In 1928 the synod reported 1,096 ministers serving 1,258 churches and substantial benevolent and property assets. The headquarters are in St. Louis, Missouri.
