Beetle control key to cucumbers says entomologist
Dr. J Drake state entomologist at Town State college says beetles are the main pest limiting cucumber growth. The striped and spotted cucumber beetles appear in large numbers mid season, damaging seedlings and flowers. A dust mixture of gypsum or sandblaster with calcium arsenate is advised, applied early, 2–3 times weekly for 8–10 applications per season, then pure dust after flowering. Some growers along the Mississippi River use peat dust instead.
