Ten South Korean navy vessels engaged in a 20 minute gunbattle with Communist shore batteries near the Korean demarcation line. Seoul officials confirmed the clash, marking a confrontation along the disputed border.
In Fairfield Iowa faculty members voiced no comment publicly about asking the board of trustees to remove Dr Millard Roberts. A campus mood of normalcy persisted but students and staff discussed the resolution of no confidence in Roberts as faculty weigh options if firing does not occur.
A high Israeli source says avoiding conflict with Arab neighbors seems almost impossible amid 11 day military buildup and harsh rhetoric. Officials fear concessions to Egyptian President Nasser would be a sop to a nation sworn to wipe out Israel, signaling deep diplomatic stalemate.
In Des Moines the Iowa Senate adjourned debate on a Democratic plan to phase out personal property taxes after technical problems were found in the measure. Senate leaders deferred further action after Andrew Frommelt voiced doubt about an amendment. Debate resumes after Memorial Day weekend with more research planned. Frommelt indicated the plan would be a start and suggested limiting the first year exemption, while noting revenue losses complicate city and county budgets. Rep. Leroy Petersen to explain the Petersen Plan next week.
In two days seven battles left 356 Communist dead as U.S. Marines fought near Da Nang on a mountain slope 30 miles away. Air strikes hit two MIG bases and power plants in North Vietnam and a missile near Haiphong reportedly damaged an unidentified merchant ship. A Navy A4 Skyhawk was shot down with the pilot listed as missing in action.
United States and France pressed Israel to avoid actions that could trigger war while Israel fears time favors Nasser’s blockade of Elath. Israel seeks Western guarantees for port access as Arab troop buildups mount and evacuations begin for diplomats’ dependents.
The Iowa House received the 91 page final draft of the legislative subdistricting plan from a bipartisan commission. Rep. Maurice Van Nostrand said amending it could take weeks, and copies were sent to county attorneys. The plan aims to convert multi member districts to single member districts under Supreme Court order.
Plans are finalized for Washingtons annual Ridiculous Day on Thursday June 8. Tom Essex chairman of RME announces prizes for outstanding individual costumes and parade entries. The Ridiculous Day parade starts at 1 15 p m with many sidewalk displays in front of Washington stores creating a Maxwell Street atmosphere in the business district.
U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk told about 700 Iowa lawyers that Washington has pursued de escalation in Vietnam and urged North Vietnam to stop shooting in South Vietnam. He noted U N involvement in the Middle East and cited cautious steps to prevent wider conflict. Accompanying him were his wife and four Iowa lawmakers.
An 18 year old Norwalk resident, John Kline, was found guilty by a federal jury of the Kellogg Savings Bank robbery on Feb 13. He faced two Des Moines co defendants, David Grandstaff and Gerald Wier, in separate trials. A hostage incident occurred when Mrs Raymond Welle was held during the heist, with about 16,000 dollars taken.
Most Washington stores will close Tuesday May 30 for Memorial Day. A few businesses keep usual hours. The courthouse post office banks and other state county and federal offices will be closed. The Evening Journal will publish at noon on that day.
