The French submarine Pluviose foundered after a collision with a cross-channel mail steamer in the English channel. All 23 crew members perished. no lives reported lost aboard the steamer at this time. Captain Bartlett to lead pole expedition after northern trip.
Twenty five more convicts joined 147 on strike in Columbus as they protested condemned food. After a parley with Warden Jones they agreed to return to work. The warden ordered the strikers hung up with arms shackled above their heads while weighing none of their body weight. Many were murderers in the bolt room.
Louis Qratch a 25 year old painter by day and burglar by night was discovered by Mrs. Dora Gleteman in her third floor Delancey Street apartment. After she beat him with a cuspidor and smashed him with a rolling pin he toppled to his death from a concrete pavement fifty feet below.
Former Judge Hanecy, longtime associate of Senator Lorimer’s La Salle Street bank, appeared in Judge McSurely’s court as attorney for Representative Lee O Neill Browne. Eva L. Canfield of Grangeville Idaho has received a license to operate a toll ferry on Salmon River below the mouth of Whitebird Creek. She will establish a fully equipped ferry line to handle passengers and freight and will pilot the craft herself making her the only ferry woman in the northwest.

Elwood Indiana May 27 a 4 year old boy was shot and killed when a gun they were playing with discharged accidentally by Arthur Beever age 7.
