In Hartford Connecticut the State Fish and Game Department dumped thousands of trout into the Housatonic River but found that the 1955 floods had less impact on fishing than feared. Officers stocking the stream were met by two anglers who had already caught nine large trout before the new stock was released.
Ninety three Washington County rural students received diplomas at the annual rural graduation ceremony in the Washington Methodist Church. Dr William J Peterson Iowa history professor addressed the graduates urging high ideals and dream attainment through dedication.
The Washington Youth Center hosts a May Mad dance open to high school students. Admission is 60 cents per couple or 35 cents for individuals. Freshman committees decorated the hall to celebrate the term end and the new record player installation.
American educators lauded President Eisenhower's Point Four plan to aid lagging nations by building science and technology capacity. Foundations like Grant Ford and Carnegie already pursue similar work, with officials from Carnegie urging serious consideration of the proposal.
A statewide drought relief effort named operation haylift was agreed to by 21 southwest Iowa counties and Gov. Leo Hoegh. The plan mobilizes 500 two ton National Guard trucks to haul roadside hay from northeast and north central Iowa to Camp Dodge for distribution to needful farms.
A 15-year-old boy shot and killed Stanley Jensen, 34, and his wife Margery, 31, at their Watseka Illinois residence after taking three weapons from Jensen. The suspect, once in St Charles School for Boys, admitted planning the killings for months. Daughters Sandra nine and Sharon five fled. police alerted after the attack. The youth remained jailed as prosecutors review charges.
A re chartering meeting of Ainsworth Cub Scouts is set for Tuesday evening May 29 at 8 p.m. at the Larry Trotter home. Ray Palmer district committee man will assist parents in planning continued Cub Scout activities in the community. Parents of all current and eligible boys are invited.
A nationwide manhunt and an all points bulletin were issued for William Boswell after a decomposed body found in his Nevada apartment was believed to be Anne Harris van Ryne the 23 year old daughter of a wealthy Philadelphia family. Fingerprints matched and dental charts were pending confirmation. The victim was four to five months pregnant and likely murdered around May 21. The suspect reportedly told his parents he was headed to New York.
Two Ainsworth residents Donald Boileau and Mrs Louise C Thompson faced arson charges after a Thursday fire at Thompson's Cafe in Ainsworth. Boileau's bond was set at 2500 dollars while Thompson awaited bond. Sheriff investigators and local firemen contained the blaze.
Police seek a tall man with a dog seen near the scene of a pre dawn bomb blast in Chicago that killed Clarence Michael Campbell 58. Investigators theorize Campbell lit a fuse after spotting the man and dog then triggered the explosion. Campbell had prior Iowa murder and kidnapping convictions later reduced to manslaughter.
Adlai Stevenson accused the administration of slowing defense to balance the budget and charged misinformation on foreign affairs. He also critiqued Estes Kefauver while both vie for Florida’s 28 convention votes. Kefauver defended his record and pledged stamina if nominated.
A two car collision at the U S 34 and Iowa 80 intersection six miles west of Burlington killed Mrs Don Schultz 48 of Burlington and injured four others. Involved were Ermal Pfeiffer 29 Burlington driving one car and Mrs Marjorie Van Henert 37 Danville driving the other. Mrs Alice Palmer 43 Burlington and her daughter Sandra 18 Burlington rode in the Pfeiffer car. Sandra suffered the most serious injuries.
Since 1939 the Red Cross has provided 225 million dollars in financial aid to servicemen veterans and their families as part of ongoing relief efforts.
The defendant served an eight year prison term for the lesser offense following a court decision.
Early indications show strong interest in Washington Ridiculous Day set for June 7 with about 50 parade entries and post parade promotions. Cornell College in Mount Vernon Iowa held groundbreaking ceremonies for a new 750000 dollar student union library. About 700 students joined in the event as Charles L Horn of the Olin Foundation and Cornell president Dr Russell D Cole turned the first spades of dirt. Horn received honorary memberships in local groups and the foundation had previously funded a 636000 dollar men’s dormitory dedicated last fall.
Police guarded multiple cities as Communists aimed to seize key municipalities in Italy. clashes between fascists and police in Rome and Milan left injuries and 16 arrests while 30 million voters prepared for 7,141 municipal and 79 provincial councils over weekend voting.
The Washington YMCA opens annual Begin to Swim sessions Monday for grades 2 through 6. Classes cap at 20 per room with some sessions already filled and remaining vacancies next week. Contact the YMCA for details. Tuesday and Friday 4 p.m. sessions shift to 4 20 p.m. next week.
Washington reports construction will start next Tuesday in Groton Connecticut on two atomic submarines. One will be the Navy’s largest radar picket vessel weighing about 6000 tons and likely faster than prior subs. The other, the Skipjack, will use a teardrop hull and single reactor to achieve higher underwater speed.
An 18 year old Daniel Clark of Sergeant Bluff filed in Polk County District Court for 50000 in damages claiming a shell explosion at the American Legion Boys State last summer left him permanently crippled. He alleges loss of left hand above the wrist and impairment of hearing and sight while his mother cares for the farm. The defendants named are the Iowa Department of the American Legion and Hawkeye Boys State, Inc.
International Harvester Farmall Works announced a 25 percent cut in tractor production and 400 job layoffs in Rock Island Illinois. The notices will be issued June 15 as large inventories blamed for both cutbacks. After June layoffs the plant will employ about 2,750 people.
Five hundred judges and legal authorities attended a tribute dinner in Chicago for retired federal Judge J Earl Major. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren and Associate Justice Sherman Minton were among the honors guests, marking Major's 19 years on the federal bench and his retirement last month.
Mrs. Fred Stigers suffered chest injuries after climbing the front bumper of an automobile to show a girl a spot on a farm seven miles south of Washington. The car hit a bump, knocked her off, and the front wheel passed over her before it stopped. She was taken to University Hospital in Iowa City. x-rays showed no broken bones.
Mrs Mildred Williams 29 of Newton was killed when her car left US 6 near Kellogg Iowa. Sheriff Scoville said the driver appeared to fall asleep, the vehicle traveled about 300 feet overturned twice and jumped a ditch and fence. Her husband died in a similar crash last year near Iowa City.
Henri Dunant and an unnamed co recipient were among the first two laureates honored in 1901 for founding the International Red Cross. The award celebrated their efforts to improve wartime humanitarian aid and relieve suffering through impartial relief.
