Soviet Volga Don Canal Opens Route for Submarine Transport
London United Press reports that the Volga Don Canal nears completion allowing ships and submarines to move from the Baltic and White Sea to the Black Sea via central Russia. The 140 mile route uses nine locks to climb from Volga elevation to the Don, linking Moscow with the Black Sea and expanding grain coal timber and oil transport while enhancing submarine mobility and secrecy.
