Ellis a 17 year old AWOL soldier pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the slaying of a Des Moines widow during a $5 robbery. He received 50 years in Fort Madison prison after the plea and sentence before Polk County District Judge Loy.

Chairman Henry Burma and member Robert Lappen traveled from Des Moines to renew inquiry begun after news director Jim Bormann of WMT Cedar Rapids revealed the recordings. Bormann said a life-term prisoner recorded parole board hearings and used one tape in a copyrighted broadcast. The officials met Warden Foss Davis and questioned several inmates with more interviews planned.
