A powerful quake rattled Illinois this morning as tremors were felt across multiple counties. Authorities reported no immediate casualties but urged residents to monitor aftershocks and follow safety guidelines. Local schools and businesses surveyed structural integrity.
Chicago reports distinct tremors at 8 30 in all northern Illinois from Chicago to Davenport and Dubuque and south to Bloomington Ill Fire reported at Aurora Joliet residents panicked as drainage canal works at Lockport damaged and floods ensued No serious damage recorded Weather Bureau confirms north to south motion with widespread but light damage from towns including Freeport Galena Belvidere Rockford Woodstock Mt Carroll Cres ton Sycamore Elgin Wheaton De Kalb Des Plaines Kingston and many others
A tremor was distinctly felt at 8 30 in Davenport lasting about twelve seconds. No damages reported locally though offices and homes felt the quake. The tremor extended through the Rock River valley to Rock Island Green River Calmar Junction and beyond with reports from northwest Iowa areas as well. Aurora Illinois schools were dismissed due to the quake's severity.

Washington May 26 The senate opened formal discussion of the sugar schedule but did not vote. Democrats McEnery Foster advocated a high sugar tariff while Beveridge argued Taft favored tariff revision. Bailey pushed for a June 10 vote on income tax amid friction with Aldrich over setting time for voting.
Informal conferences showed Republicans backing the Cummins amendment want to keep a coalition with Democrats but not cede control of the income tax fight. Senator Curemins relayed this view to Senator Bailey.
Judge Houghton in the county court affirmed Laura Bunn Clark as the legal wife of Rev EE Davidson former pastor of First Christian church. Clark claimed they were secretly married in St Louis by a private contract on an envelope. Davidson left after the charge and was last heard from in Toronto.
Centerville Iowa May 26 reports say John Junkin may plead guilty to the murder of Clara Rosen to escape the scaffold. County Attorney Cornell doubts the plea saves him and warns a death penalty if entered. Junkin appeared shaken during arraignment as crowds pressed and the judge considered a continuance.
In Vicksburg Mississippi on May 26 a gasoline boat named Dorris carrying ten passengers capsized in the Yazoo canal during a storm. Seven persons are believed drowned with rescuers continuing search efforts.
Four children burned during the commencement exercises at Mrs. Boyd's school in Central City Kentucky died. The victims are Selma Clay Dorothy Clay Nell McGeary and Louise Marshall aged five seven five and eight. Rena May Miller aged five may recover. Applause after a drill caused a child to drop a lamp igniting dresses and masks. men acted to save the children as darkness fell. Mrs B C Boyd the music teacher may lose her mind from grief and burns.
A Black man hurried from the courtroom to the grand jury chamber under heavy guard. Hundreds of Ottumwa residents fill the city as sheriffs and officers take no chances. Several men cluster around the defendant whenever he is moved.
New York May 26 Miss Rachel Benjamin principal of a Washington Irving High School branch in West End Avenue served notice that female pupils arriving with powder and beauty spots will be stood up before their classes and have the embellishments publicly washed off. She said painting and powdering had risen to alarming levels among well to do families.

Assembly weighs 1 073 971 dollars for home missions and 800000 requested for next year. Reverend Thompson warns of 200 million US population in fifty years and calls for immigrant Christianization.
Denver May 26 The department of justice will vigorously pursue land fraud cases in Colorado and western states. M C Burch says a special bureau will be formed with a detective force to lead the prosecutions and reassemble evidence gathering efforts.
Newark report says Captain Thomas F. Baldwin did not fly to New York and back due to sand bag adjustment issues. He achieved a wind assisted 300 yard trial with altitudes to 150 feet, hoping for a future long trip. In Stockton, California, Mrs Warren Jones and a three year old died when an auto overturned in two feet of water. Isaac Robinson injured while Mrs Robinson survived by daughter’s quick actions.
Cherokee Oklahoma May 26. Big loaves priced at 25 cents drew Sheriff Hughby’s suspicion and a local baker was arrested after an inspection revealed a small bottle of whiskey hidden inside a loaf. The ad had claimed wheat yield increases.
