Large scale labor action looms in Virginia and West Virginia as miners press for an eight hour day. Union polling shows over 60 percent of stationary firemen may quit June 2, with Hazelton and Blairsville stations preparing non union replacements. Railway workers discuss support but have taken no action yet.
A skirmish near Constantinople between 60 Bulgarian revolutionaries and Turkish detachments resulted in six Bulgarians killed and seven wounded with Turkish casualties reported. Separate dispatches from Martinique and Paris note no change in conditions there.
A Chron iclene report from Indianapolis outlines plans to merge 117 coal mines across Indiana into a single corporation with headquarters in Indianapolis. The project, led by John Baye of Sullivan, would place all mines under one board, absorbing smaller firms and transferring larger ones into the new entity, with an expected completion within a month.
United Miners adjourned after ordering a general strike in West Virginia and Virginia to begin June 7 unless wages rise 10 to 22 percent. About 90 000 miners and laborers are expected to join, with extensive union support and potential 125 000 idle workers. Shamokin details say Western Pennsylvania mines may join and national action could suspend contracts if needed.
In Detroit on May 24 twelve hundred female and about fifty male workers at Brown Bros cigar factory, a large non union plant of the American Cigar Co, strike after John H Brown resigns as manager. Workers fear wage cuts under new leadership following Brown’s departure. In New York, May 24 a report says William Moore of the National Civic Federation was asked to arrange talks with Pottsville miners and operators. Moore would not confirm receipt but says the coal strike remains under consideration.
A private letter from Vryheid reports General Botha learned that Boer aides Jacobus de Wet and Louis Eslem had Oxford ties. They asked who won the annual Oxford vs Cambridge boat race, signaling curiosity about English rivalries amid peace talks. Also notes foreclosure filings on the Rip Van Winkle inn in Pine Hill Catskills.
Chicago May 26 Fred Eberhardt admitted to Inspector Campbell that he shot and killed his wife at 180 Townsend street after telling several stories of the crime. He gave no motive for the killing.
In Cheyenne Wyoming on May 24 De Wie Ham Craig Burke aged 95 died. He served on the church council that tried Rev. Henry Ward Beecher.
Manila reports released public the court martial verdicts for Major L. W. T. Waller and Lieutenant John A. Ty of the Marine Corps who ordered the execution of natives on Samar without trial. The reviewing authority condemned Waller for ordering retaliatory killings, saying it exceeded justice and mockingly noted he failed to consult General Smith before acting while ill and under pressure.
The reviewer approves most findings that Major Waller is not guilty of murder but disapproves the minor offense acquittal. The Day case notes that Waller’s disobeying order tainted the action, and Day, if motivated by duty, might have prevented the incident. Reported from San Francisco and New York on May 26.
Fremont Nebraska May 26 funnel shaped clouds swept over the town then moved toward ten miles west. A following storm blew down several barns and other buildings but no lives were reported lost or injuries. Communication with outside towns incomplete.
