Iowa hog price outlook seen modest rise this summer

Iowa State University extension economist Gene Futrell says hog prices may rise modestly in late May and June due to lower fall farrowings last autumn. He notes prices in Iowa hovered near 18.50 to 19.75 per cwt for Nos 1 and 2 hogs, with projections of $20.50 to $21.50 in interior Iowa by late June or early July amid strong cattle prices and stable demand. He adds fall and winter prices should stay profitable if March 1 farrowing plans materialize, while production remains concentrated in larger operations and the corn hog ratio dampens expansion.
