Rooster day in Washington drew crowds and set a market record with 19 275 pounds of roosters sold at Reister and Gibson markets, beating last year’s 10161 pounds. About 2000 roosters, averaging five pounds each, fed a day of sales prizes and town events as locals and visitors joined the event.

Cedar Rapids Theater Fire Destroys Historic Venue

A major blaze gutted the Majess Lie theater in Cedar Rapids causing an estimated 175000 dollars in losses. Firefighters battled flames for hours after the fire was discovered around 5 am in a building near the loop district and close to the Quaker Oats plant Limback Lumber and Roosevelt hotel. The theater had closed for the summer just a week earlier and was once the city’s showplace.

Kerr and Dawson Return to Jail After Escape

Kerr and Merle Dawson returned of their own accord to the county jail after three weeks away. They appeared to Sheriff H. H. McCarty and expressed remorse, saying they were ready to serve their terms. Prosecutors plan to charge them with jail escape when court reconvenes next month.
