Interstate Commerce Commission orders about ten percent reductions in freight charges with regional splits of 14 percent in the East 18 percent in the West and 12 percent in Southern and Mountain Pacific zones. Passenger and Pullman rates remain unchanged and agricultural rates are largely exempt. The Commission argues lower rates will restore commerce while railroads may earn 5 percent on property value.

Five Die in Deep Sewer Shaft Rescue Attempt
Milwaukee May 25 three city firemen and two tunnel workers died from gas and electricity at the bottom of a 12 foot shaft in the intercepting sewer system at National and Twentieth avenues. Nearly a score of men were overcome by gas fumes and six seriously hurt. Firemen entered to rescue two tunnel workers who had been overcome. John Schleck, a tunnel worker, first into the shaft, did not return. Mathias Wambach and later Anton Krafchek followed as authorities summoned help and respirators.
