Des Moines reports a remarkable accident reveals that the 1897 Iowa code revision likely shifted presidential electors to congressional districts. State Senator Berry and elections committee members doubt the change was intended and expect a return to the original method. Red Oak notes deposed Villisea school leaders Prof C C Williamson and Miss Stella Wescott have left town. Williamson to pay about 150 dollars to his wife.
Great preparations are under way in Burlington for the eighth annual interstate sheriff convention to be held June 14 and 15, coinciding with the Iowa Bankers association meeting. Hotels will overflow with distinguished guests and the hosting committee aims to provide ample entertainment for the prominent men attending both gatherings.
Frank Peterson sentenced to twenty five years in state prison for criminally assaulting Mary Black. He has furnished bonds totaling twenty five thousand dollars, and the case will be appealed to the supreme court.
Eldon report says Hart, a supposed cattle buyer, swindled Dunning at least $125 last fall. Hart, 70, was captured last night in Birmingham and brought to town this morning.
Dr Charles E Bruce superintendent Ebnezer Wright western agent and eleven children five girls six boys arrived by the Burlington in Ottumwa to be placed with local and country families who have applied to the asylum for adoptive homes. The children appeared neat bright and well dressed reflecting good care at their orphan home.
The National Holiness association led by Rev J Fowler and Rev M D Collins will hold its annual business meeting in Des Moines on June 15. The gathering accompanies the Business Camp meeting at Chautauqua Park, Des Moines, and will bring several national leaders to the event.
At the Planters hotel in St Louis on May 25 the Democratic conference will discuss campaign methods. With only 26 committee members pledged the meeting may be informal unless a quorum of about 23 is present. Leaders hint at anti trust as a rallying cry followed by anti imperialism and self determination.
Chicago judge Tuley rules a creditor cannot garnish more wages than the debtor earns at service of the writ. The decision limits future wage garnishment and could reshape wage seizure practice, opposing creditors pursuing total income. In San Francisco, promoters seek a 100609 monument to naval deeds led by ex mayor Pond as treasurer with fundraising details to follow.
Chicago reports lists of league scores with multiple city matchups including Chicago beating Philadelphia and Cincinnati over New York. Separate item from Belvidere details Joel Till shooting his wife then killing himself near Long Bridge Warren county. New York May 25 The eightieth birthday of Queen Victoria was marked by a world-spanning display of goodwill. In New York the British schools and universities club hosted a fourth annual dinner at Brevoort House with Rear Admiral SampsonGuest of honor and a toast to the queen. A telegram from Governor Roosevelt praised Britain’s wartime friendship with America. Veterans from Chapin post G A R and W W Cook post joined a parade, ending with toasts at a Britannia club banquet featuring American, Canadian and British attendees and songs honoring the queen and president.
In Key West a banquet honored the queen’s birthday hosted by British consul W J H Taylor and Edward Ludlow with officials from army to state level in attendance and toasts. At Port Tampa, the harbor celebrated with flag displays, a grand arch showing the British lion and American eagle, and two British cruisers along with marines aboard the Intrepid and Pearl arriving at dawn amid cheers and music.
In Paris Berlin Vienna and other European cities British residents hosted banquets attended by dignitaries. Delcassa and Loubet were represented in Paris while Germanys emperor and empress and other royals attended in Berlin. Vienna saw Emperor Francis Joseph greet the British envoy in person. The US President sent a telegram from the Executive Mansion Washington May 24 offering congratulations and wishes for happiness and prosperity. At Manila American forces joined British celebrants aboard a British cruiser.
