Colonel Nicholas Senn moves to Chickamauga as assistant surgeon general. First Lieutenant George R Linn named ordnance officer. News also notes Illinois naval reserve departure for Sampson’s fleet and local ceremonies around flag presentations for Company F of Portage Wisconsin.
Reports from Madrid London and Washington describe a wavering silence from squadrons in the Indian seas and rumors of Spanish fleet movements. Officials warn that cable cuts and coal transfers in Hawaii may signal extended hostilities and potential political repercussions for U S control of the islands. A Cuban expedition steamer named Sai nt loaded with material sailed from Mobile en route likely to Tampa.

At Chickamauga National Park on May 25 the 96 000 volunteer troops near tents prepared for a large drill. The First Vermont and Third Tennessee regiments arrived to join the First Division under General Wilson for a detailed inspection and a sham battle planned by General Breckinridge.
The United States Wire Nail company organized in Philadelphia aims to absorb anti trust nail plants. It will close leases and control Hazen mills in Anderson Indiana and start a 400 worker wire mill next week. It has already absorbed plants in Pittsburg Cleveland St Louis Newburg and Kanawha City and plans billet plants in Duluth.
Post master General Smith announced two mail orders affecting service members and the Philippines. One reclassifies Philippines mail to domestic rates and directs prompt forwarding via San Francisco. The other allows unpaid letters to be sent with postage collected on delivery, following 1879 statute and proper authentication by officers or surgeons.
