Paul Williams Jr. aged 20 skidded his motorcycle at an Ironton intersection and broke a fireplug. He was lifted by the jet of water, then found unhurt but dizzy and wet as police, a tire truck and a water company crew responded.
White House indicated President Eisenhower will sign the revamped farm bill next week. The measure includes a soil bank of 1.2 billion dollars and ties price supports for corn and feed grains to acreage compliance, with effects expected to show after the 1957 harvest. Weather will largely influence crop outcomes this year and the impact on the 1956 crop remains uncertain.
Solicitors contact Washington merchants for the Ridiculous Day Program on June 7. A list of participating firms includes J. C. Penney Co, Gamble Store, Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward, Klein Clothing, Spurgeon’s, Phillips Drug, Washington State Bank, and many others planning parades contests beauty displays and window themes.
Pupils from Taylor School nine grade, their teacher Mrs. Leonard Wheatley, and mothers toured the Evening Journal plant Wednesday as a tribute to the last day of school. They traveled from Wy man to Washington, enjoyed a picnic, and visited Griffith and Hed berg Dairy, the Washington Fire Station, and a Button factory before the Journal tour.
Washington County families are invited to Lake Darling for a weekend camp June 2 to 4. Marvel Funk at the extension office handles reservations. 45 have been received. The program runs from 2 p.m. Saturday to dinner Sunday with crafts boating fishing swimming games and dancing. Weekend fee is $1.50 per adult and $1 per child, covering food lodging and insurance.
Washington High School will distribute its Hi-Life 1956 annuals to students when they return for report cards Friday afternoon. Principal Carl Paetz announced the annuals have arrived and distribution plans are set. Co editors Margaret Ahrens and Pauline Crone led the 1956 edition dedicated to art teacher Carlton Bump.
Indian Guides of the Washington YMCA plan their annual longhouse meeting at Lake Darling Youth Center. Tribes Shawnees and Camanche, led by Stanley Wallace and James Birney, will be inducted during Friday evening events. Registration is $4 and Dick Thompson at the YMCA handles inquiries.
George Stumpf 98 of Richmond died Wednesday after a three month illness. Funeral services will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond with Rev. William Snell. Rosary Friday at 8 p.m. at Petersime Funeral Home Kalona. Survivors: six sons Bert Fred Harry Harold Paul William all of Kalona, daughter Vera Anderson of Cedar Rapids. Preceded by wife Catherine, son Guy, three brothers, two sisters.
Sheriff's deputies investigated a fire at Thompson's Cafe on Main Street in Ainsworth reported at 5 40 AM. Firefighters controlled the blaze but the building suffered heavy smoke and water damage.
A Washington County Young Republican Club meeting at the Norton home appointed a nominating committee to propose new officers for the bi-annual county meeting in June. President Robert Miller of Crawfordsville chaired the session and plans were made for an upcoming event.
Russia has invited Gen. Nathan F. Twining and a small Air Force delegation to attend Moscow’s June 24 air show. The invitation is under consideration by the State Department and has not been extended to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. U.S. officials noted no formal invitation yet, while Moscow hints at possible broader talks.
Rev Kinnavey spoke at the St James graduation Wednesday night as eighth grade students received recognitions. Penmanship honors went to Sue Bruty Barbara Barham Maria Da Silva Barbara Minick Dolores Zager and perfect attendance to Donna Mae Friese Janis Heck Joanne Richardson and Janis Fuhr. Joe McKeone earned the altar boy award for faithful service.
President Eisenhower asks Congress to speed action on an 18 point program including school funding highways foreign aid and housing. The list aims for favorable action before adjournment with items like a new farm bill federal grants for schools and a major highway bill.
Memorial Day programs were held this morning at the high school and junior high school. Don Hazen of the Leon Beaty American Legion post said the series concluded this week in all local schools. Bob Brewer spoke at the high school and Frank Patterson at the junior high. Other speakers included Lloyd Adkins at Lincoln John Phleger at Stewart and Mrs George Krogmeier at St James.
The meeting drew four junior delegates to the presidential state convention Tom Morrison Ruth Augustine Wayne Gamon and Richard Boettcher were present outlining an all out membership drive through June 15.
Keota Mrs Rose E Robertson 75 died this morning at 5 45 at the home of her daughter Mrs Bernard Hahn in Keota She was born Nov 19 1880 in Johnson County daughter of John Peter and Harriet Hughes Frank She married Roy H Robertson Dec 21 1904 who died in 1949 They farmed near Wellman 35 years She lived with her daughter since 1950 Survivors include five daughters 13 grandchildren three great grandchildren one brother and two sisters The funeral arrangements are pending at Powell Funeral Home Keota
Wellman Levi D. Miller 77 died at his daughter’s home in Wellman after years of ill health. Funeral services will be held at the Wellman Mennonite Church Saturday at 10 a.m. with ministers P J Blosser George Miller and Max Yoder officiating. Burial follows at Wellman Mennonite Cemetery. Powell Funeral Home of Wellman in charge. Miller born March 24 1879 in Berlin Ohio was married Sept 23 1907 to Magdeline Beachy. He and his wife lived in Wellman 48 years. survivors include his wife three sons Chester Nelson of Wellman Vernon of Keota three daughters Ed Burkholder of Wellman Edwin Bender of Kalona and Delmar Stutzman of Littleton Colorado three brothers Eli Calvin of Millersburg Ohio Noah of Berlin Ohio one sister Fannie Helmuth of Oregon and 21 grandchildren. one daughter preceded him in death.
In Des Moines Baptist minister Sam Morris says talks with Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Co. fail to progress as state officials convene to end a rift over hiring non drinkers. Morris vows to continue his sitdown protest, seeking reinstatement after removal as company president.
The University of Iowa announced the 57th summer session will run from June 12 to August 8. Details on courses and registration were not provided in the release.
About 20 cars of a freight train derailed four miles east of Muscatine on tracks used by Rock Island and Milwaukee railroads. Cause unknown. Witness Lawrence Sherrill reported sparks from under a car and dust obscuring the highway as his Swift and Co. truck slid into a ditch. he was uninjured. The train’s horn on new cars stuck and blew for several minutes.

Washington High School Class of 1956 will receive diplomas in the 86th annual Commencement in the new gymnasium. The program begins at 8 p.m. Dr. James L. Hilton, president of Iowa State College, will give the commencement address.
The second country club dance will be Saturday night May 26 with Mr and Mrs John Butler and Mr and Mrs Calvin Wolfe directing. Tickets sold at Phillips Drug Store and by committee members. Jimmy Dennis Band will provide music. A Memorial Day potluck dinner is planned with Butler Krogmeier Hiss Owen as committee. A mixed foursome golf event starts at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, followed by dinner at 6 p.m.
