The Graves Audio plans to launch a beauty contest this week attracting local attention. Contestant pictures will be taken and judged by an out of town committee. Several young ladies have entered and many more expected before the September deadline. Photos will be shown in the studio display at the northwest square corner.
Seventy six district schools joined in a picnic and afternoon program at the Seventy Six Center school last Friday to celebrate the last day of school. Teachers, pupils and many patrons enjoyed a day of recitations songs dialogues and group performances by numerous named students and schools, with several items listed such as Tasman school Little Fishes and Thelma Bower song.
Mr and Mrs Major Sneath of the Voluntary Slum Army will be stationed in Washington at 651 South Avenue C telephone 197 Black Their work includes jail street church and home missionary efforts Contributions of old clothing furniture will be received and put to use They will hold regular services as soon as a hall is located They will be assisted by Gen H H Moran and Major Hansen on headquarters staff
Keota resident Peter Lillig aged 52 died at 11 p m Saturday night at the county hospital after about a week there following an intestinal operation. Peritonitis was the cause. Funeral services will be held 9 a m Tuesday at the Catholic church in Keota with Rev Heinan officiating. Burial will be in Keota cemetery. Born in Germany December 22 1868 he came to this country with his parents and lived for years in Keokuk county near Keota. He was a devout Catholic and a well known citizen. Survived by his widow nine children and his 85 year old mother who lived with him. A sister Mrs Mike Fagen of near Chicago was with him at death.
Mrs J S Kuhn of South Third avenue died at 12 16 today after a six week illness. She was 60 and had lived in Washington 25 years. She is survived by her husband and three daughters. Funeral and obituary notice to appear in the Journal tomorrow. Monmouth Pastor Rev KB F Kimmelshue led services at First United Presbyterian church with two sermons and Dr Mile Taylor of Philadelphia offered prayer.
Keota resident A. McNurlen has been chosen as the Decoration day speaker for Clay. Services are set for Sunday morning May 30 at the Clay church followed by graveside ceremonies in the nearby cemetery. Fifteen soldiers lie in the Clay cemetery including a War of 1812 veteran and Cecil Alter who served in the World War.
Junior high students present two short plays tomorrow at eight to aid the school picture fund. Admission costs 10 and 15 cents. Miss Eleanor Walker coaches the casts as rehearsals proceed.
Rev Leslie Mountford urged G A R and W R C to recall God’s role in history and in mankind’s wars. He argued Christianity shapes and is shaped by conflict, praising democracy’s Christian roots in Civil and World Wars. The service drew many attendees, flags and flowers in the church, with prayers from local clergy.
Paneral services were held at the late home at two o'clock Sunday morning for Paul Verne Bower, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bower, who died Friday afternoon. Rev. M. R. Kegan was in charge. Interment was at Grace I.
Walter Mohnsen of Muscatine returns as conductor of the orchestra for a Thursday armory dance. Roy Gravel, formerly solo cornet with the 126th Artillery Band, also plays in the group that entertained last February in Graham.
Miss Isabel Kellman urged students to stay physically mentally and morally fit during a county health survey at the high school assembly. She warned how minor health neglects like diseased tonsils can derail athletic careers and cited wartime hospital work in France and a dying soldier's message to American children. The talk followed by addressing students from na Richmond and Riverside.
Dwight Raby Maxwell aged one month died at ten o clock Sunday at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Lloyd Maxwell in Shannon Heights after a two day illness marked by a severe cold. Survived by parents and brothers Rodney and Cloyce. Funeral at two this afternoon at home with interment in Elm Grove cemetery.
The Meyd Rower couple express gratitude through the Journal for the sympathy and many beautiful flowers received after the death of their baby.
Miss Hazel Davison arrived in Des Moines this morning following a visit with her friend Miss Mary Forman.
Seats go on sale at Phillips drug store at eight tomorrow for Thursday’s show in the high school auditorium. A second sale at eight Wednesday for Friday’s 8 pm performance. The three act comedy The Rejuvenation of Aunt Mary by Anne Warner features a large cast under Miss Eva Mae Willer. Cast list includes Aunt Mary Watkins Mildred Mauthe John Watkins Jr Burnett Mitchell Weldin Richard Stephens and others with music by the high school orchestra.
Raby Was 9 Days Old. Gladys Lola Warner born May 14 died at five o'clock Saturday evening at the county hospital. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Warner. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hunt of Fairfield are the parents of a baby girl born at the Jefferson county hospital last week. Mrs. Hunt was Hazel Martin of Washington before her marriage.
Georges F Belfils of Belfort France arrived in Washington to visit his great aunt Mrs Louise Dillange at 515 South Seventh Avenue. He is an electrical engineer spending months in America on business for Alsace Construction to study plants for postwar reconstruction in France. He toured General Electric New York Westinghouse Pittsburgh and will inspect Pacific coast water power plants before sailing home in July.
Shubert Orchestra members touring the western states report a fine trip in a journal card from leader George Bickford. The Colorado routing lists Sterling May 24, Ft. Morgan May 25, Brighton May 26, Platteville May 27, Ft. Collins May 28, Boulder May 29 and 30, Greeley June 1, Longmont June 2 and 3, Colorado Springs June 4, and La Junta June 4.
A pleasant program titled Entertainment at Chester will be held Wednesday May 26 at West Chester Baptist Church. The Woods Entertainers a six member group will present an orchestra with military marches overtures and orchestral numbers along with violin and trombone solos. Vocal selections readings and more will diversify the event to start at eight o clock.
J C H Finney left this morning for Rimersburg Pa to visit friends and relatives and attend the Synod of the Associate Presbyterian church.
