Editorial on traffic safety and enforcement in Iowa
A columnist argues that harsher penalties alone won’t reduce accidents. He urges higher enforcement likelihood, noting new electronic speed detectors and better policing as key. The piece suggests compliance rises when drivers believe they will be caught every time they violate a rule. Good luck, Governor Hughes.

Birds and Wildflowers To the Editor West Chester Iowa
Kathy and I explored a patch of land west of Ronnie Goff's place between the road under the railroad trestle and Dead Man's Crossing. We saw a host of shooting stars and many native plants in bloom and coming blooms including prairie phlox wild blue phlox solomon's seal and other species. We urged preserving the area as a valuable addition to the county park system and praised not spraying brush along Hayes Timber road. We also noted a rich bird life with many species observed along the road and nearby fields. West Chester Iowa

Declarer wins with trump finesse to force grand slam
In a bridge problem from Syndicate Inc dated 5-23-63, A98 East K16 shows declarer cashing last trump while West is squeezed. If West discards king of hearts or diamonds, dummy’s eight or declarer’s diamonds yield tricks. South makes the grand slam by exhausting a defender’s heart while guarding against a favorable diamond division, even if hearts split 5-4. Two chances to make the hand beat one.
