Mrs Mario A Walsh of Camden was sentenced to 60 days in jail and fined 8500 after pleading failure to pay income tax on the 810,928 she received from the government for informing on her employers in an income tax evasion case.
Washington county extension director Tom Robb outlines a soil testing program using Iowa State College labs to determine lime, nitrogen, phosphate, and potash needs. After lab results, Robb visits farmers to tailor fertilizer rates, with three options and field notes guiding rotation plans and ongoing sampling.
A class of eight and four Washington county rural school students completed eighth grade Friday at the Washington Methodist church. State Rep. Fred Schwengel urged them to keep on learning, with diplomas presented by County Superintendent Lester Krabill. Citizenship awards went to Sharon Trier, Gale Whitacre, and Emma Grace Bontrager. Several students were honored as honor students, and local musicians provided performances.
French units with tanks and planes pushed into Communist held areas south of Hanoi. Yen Phu and Yen Hu fell while French forces reported heavy enemy losses and a strong Viet Minh defense near the Khenon plateau. Corsair fighters and amphibious vehicles supported the attack before the columns withdrew to northern bases.
Washington county churches plan Rural Life Sunday on May 23 backed by the National Council of Churches of Christ. The 1954 theme America Needs Strong Rural Churches highlights rural members and 4 H and FFA youths welcomed at any church. The observance emphasizes stewardship of soil and animal life to feed the world.
A Detroit fire at the race course killed an estimated 45 horses and injured four men. More than 1,000 horses were turned loose to run in darkness as firefighters worked to control the blaze. A Livonia police officer spotted the flames around midnight as the Michigan Racing Association had just opened a Sunday season and housed about 1,200 horses at the track.
Wellman Rotary club approves building a cabin at Lake Darling youth center to house cooks for the camp. Local groups and interested persons urged to contribute funds, with Maplecrest Turkey company offering transport and labor. Cabin to be erected in the name of the town and finished by June 1.
The House Ways and Means Committee backed increases in old age benefits and broader coverage under the federal program. They approved raises from 5 to 25 dollars monthly for retired workers and moved to extend coverage to farmers and professionals. Committee action on this key Eisenhower proposal is expected to finish next week with a House vote possible in early June.
John son County Sheriff Albert v. Murphy reported the theft of $1,000 worth of office equipment from two Hills feed dealers. Three typewriters two electric adding machines and $8 in cash were taken.
Senator Harry F. Byrd accuses Housing chief Albert M. Cole of failing to verify costs behind postwar apartment projects. He demands names of builders profiting from government backed loans and questions IRS records on project costs and profits.
Vacation Bible school will open at Washington Methodist Church on June 7 and run through June 1s. Mrs Ruth Simpson is general superintendent, with Mrs John Hadberg, Mrs Don Batterson, and Mrs Lyle Hayes directing the kindergarten, primary and junior departments. Sessions run daily 9 to 11 30 a.m. for children from kindergarten through sixth grade.
Dr Clow will participate in the Iowa Osteopathic Convention held in Des Moines on Monday and Tuesday.
The fair association board approves water from Washington city mains into the grounds for August use and funds a cattle show building. Plans include scales for livestock, a pole construction 40 to 50 by 90 to 120 feet, and borrowing to cover costs with tax receipts expected later. A carnival firm is hired and August 10 12 set for events.
In Memphis a burglar played with a typewriter while two accomplices pried open a safe. He typed the intruders names on a sheet of paper and left it at the scene, giving police a clear clue to the culprits.
Washington reports say military authorities see no imminent plan by Chinese Communists to attack Formosa despite stepped up sea and air skirmishes around the Tachen Islands. Russianbuilt MiG-15s have engaged Nationalist fighters as Red units build strength on the coast opposite Formosa since the Korean armistice.
Mrs Ollie Morgan 88 died at her farm home five miles north of Richland at 6 a m. Funeral services set for Monday May 24 at 2 30 p m in Richland Friends church with Rev Esther Figgins officiating. She born November 16 1865 to Henry and Rachel McConnell. Survived by daughter Mrs Carol Morgan and sister Nattie Stephenson of Troy Idaho. Gould funeral home in charge.
Jacob Simmering 94 died at home 609 West Madison Street at 5 a.m. due to infirmities of old age after two weeks of serious illness. Funeral at 2 p.m. Monday May 24 at Jones funeral home with Dr. William J. Grossheim. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. Survived by wife Lena died 1885, two marriages, nine children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was born December 6 1859 in Germany and moved to the United States in 1875 and to Washington in 1920.
A special election is planned in Wellman on June 17 to decide whether the town shall issue bonds not exceeding 35000 dollars for the extension and reconstruction of the town water system.
The West presented a 14 point compromise plan for nationwide elections to unify Korea with UN supervision in six months. South Korea accepted, but the Communists were expected to reject quickly. The plan calls for Chinese troop evacuation, U N forces withdrawal before voting, and a constitutional change in South Korea.
In Guatemala City authorities report foreign saboteurs attempted to blow up a train carrying arms from Stettin, Poland. An ensuing gun battle left a Guatemalan soldier dead and three wounded as troops close in on the fugitives near Castenada, ten miles from Puerto Barrios.
Mrs Katherine Bartosky aged 103 died at her Iowa City residence at 9 a m. She was mother to Mrs Mayme Burich who once worked in Roths child store and to Mrs Carl Newall. Funeral services are set for 9 a m Monday at St Wescelaus Catholic Church with a rosary at 7 30 p m Sunday in the Hohenschuh mortuary.
