Reports from western Korea describe a Communist retreat amid Allied pursuit. Reds attacked east of Pungam near the coast, cut the Kangnung Wonju highway, and streamed east of the 2nd Division lines toward the Pungam breakthrough as Allied reinforcements hit hard in several sectors.
Leo Marie and Al Chebuhar attended the state Knights of Columbus convention in Burlington as official delegates from Council No. 2008. Marie was named an alternate delegate to the national gathering in Pittsburgh. Dr. E J Tierney was reappointed state deputy, with others named as secretary, treasurer, garden, advocate, and chaplain. Gertrude Payne began work at Tom Duncan's Shop for Wogen on Monday.

City council last night debated street repairs and approved temporary oil coating to dustier streets while awaiting a permanent solution. Routine items were also reviewed by council members.
Wichita police feared Kansas City salesman Emerson Williams may have been robbed and beaten by a hitchhiker after his car with a wallet and bloody handkerchief was found near Wichita. Williams, 34, of Rankin Manufacturing Co. Cedar Falls Iowa, had planned a May 14 trip to Belton Missouri and has not been heard from since.
Round two of the Korean War offensive ended in a decisive UN victory as Communist assaults failed to exploit gaps. The UN reported about 1 618 killed or wounded, while Communist losses ranged between 50 000 and 60 000, with heavy casualties and prisoners.
CAMP DEL MAR Calif. Marine Corps launches inquiry into the deaths of four enlisted Marines who drowned when their landing craft capsized during a practice amphibious landing. Twelve other crew members escaped. eighteen Marines and three Navy crewmen were aboard. three died at sea and one later at Santa Margarita Naval Hospital.
Girls aged seven to twelve may join a cooperative summer day camp run by the YWCA and Camp Fire. The eight week program meets Wednesdays at Sunset Park pavilion with some activities at Chautauqua grounds, and one Thursday session. Registration is 50 cents due by June 2.
Nineteen fines were levied in the city police court including five $1 penalties for ignoring one way signs on South Third avenue. The U S government moves to end the general price freeze with ceilings on wholesale and retail items including liquor toys and washing machines The measure will adjust markups for wholesalers and all remaining frozen retail goods and is expected to be signed by Michael V DiSalle later this week Retail items such as wines beer liquors soft drinks ice creams toys hardware large appliances millwork lumber and many others will be covered Manufacturers may add pre Korean cost increases for labor and materials resulting in some price rises and some rollbacks.
Workmen were busy today installing overhead doors at the Washington city fire station. The new doors will replace the older folding type now in use.

Iowa highway officials announced a nine million dollar reconstruction plan for 632 miles of roads. Gov Beardsley and chief engineer Ifred R White led a conference noting most work target major cross state routes. First project covers 27 miles of highway 150 northwest of Cedar Rapids with asphalt overlay.
