Freedmen Run Court and Education Drive After War
After a successful rearrangement for school commissioners a civil court composed of Freedmen was set up to try disputes and crimes on Woods plantation and the Bend. Three judges one sheriff and one prosecuting attorney handled cases with the sheriff as arresting officer. The first trial for cruelty resulted in a guilty verdict and a three month government farm sentence. The effort promoted personal responsibility and aided transition to citizenship, followed by notes on Rev S M Coon and postwar education efforts centered at Knoxville College and Freedmen missions, highlighting enrollment and outcomes.
