In Foxboro Massachusetts clergy will read the 33,000 American service members killed in Vietnam from the town common bandstand during Memorial Day weekend. The four clergymen will take half hour turns at 2 p.m. Sunday for a total of about 20 hours of readings and prayers.
Washington UPI reports Ad deke H Boerma head of the FAO told a U S audience that while conditions have improved, the world food problem remains and must not be dismissed as solved. He cited good weather and new crop varieties in India as factors, cautioning against wishful thinking.
In Des Moines the Iowa House approved including a provision to cut welfare funds for able bodied recipients who refuse work or training. The measure, added by the Senate, faced opposition from Rep. Gannon and Rep. Lipsky who warned it could violate federal rules. An amendment by Rep. McCartney exempted some independence from work or training requirements for dependent children. The bill advances with the dissenting votes noted.
The Washington YMCA held its 45th annual meeting with a dinner in the Community Room. President Don Minick led proceedings and elections to the board included Don Minick Bob Huber Lee Holland Bob Reed and Dick Ross ending in 1972. Verle Gallagher announced the nominating committee. Senators Hughes and Yarborough announce a relentless investigation into alcoholism drug abuse and narcotics addiction in the United States. Hughes as a recovered alcoholic cites 5 million alcoholics and suggests broad concealed problems affecting 40 to 50 million. He notes government and military links and calls for public attention to the scope of the issue.
U S paratroopers cleared Hamburger Hill of remaining North Vietnamese snipers from a Communist regiment that had defended the peak during a 10 day battle. The 101st Airborne captured the hill on their 11th assault, with 12 snipers killed and 55 Americans dead in the fight. Communists reported 400 dead. U S losses included three dead and 15 wounded in other DMZ and Saigon front actions.
The Iowa Senate approved a bill to take 1.7 million dollars annually from the road use tax fund to cover drivers education in schools. The vote was 35 to 15 with Gov. Robert Ray seeking the legislation. the House opposed but failed to block it and may reconsider the Senate tweak to round vehicle registration fees to the nearest dollar to offset lost revenue.

Apollo 10's crew led by Commander Thomas Stafford and pilots John Young and Eugene Cernan entered a critical phase closing in on the moon. They planned lunar orbit insertion and later tests of the Snoopy lunar lander to evaluate sites for Apollo 11, with preparations and briefings continuing at Houston and Smithsonian observers awaiting color transmissions from lunar orbit. Hydrogen bubbles in drinking water were noted as a minor issue while crews slept and prepared for the next maneuvers.
