Khrushchev Delays Berlin Action Amid U.S. Election Stakes

Premier Khrushchev said he will hold off on West Berlin measures for six to eight months awaiting a new U.S. president and a possible summit. He warned against an eternal occupation and criticized Eisenhower, the Pentagon, and the U2 flight while urging talks with any president other than Eisenhower.

Washington High hosts annual Distributive Education banquet

Washington High School DE students hosted their employers at a dining program in Captain's Table. Ralph Wahrer Iowa City High School spoke. Edwin Nelson state DE supervisor attended. Claude Woods and John Phieger received honorary membership certificates. Students averaged 900 hours on the job. total class payroll was 10 250 dollars. Nellie Lindsey won a DE contest speech. Jim Bennett presided. Tom Young presented awards. George Chambers advised the DE program.

The Christian Church launches its annual financial drive Sunday afternoon at 1 30 with Ed Hutchcroft directing. Fred Bourgeois is program chairman and Don McDaniel budget chairman. Laurene Knapp is materials chair. Dale Doggett visitation chair. Division leaders are Dean Clingman and Bill Hutchinson. Mrs. George Cave Dies at 78 in Washington

Mrs. Nellie Alice Rowe Cave, 78, died Friday morning May 20, 1966, at her home 408 South Iowa Avenue Washington. She was born April 17, 1882 in Keokuk County and married George E. Cave in Keota June 17, 1903. Survivors include George E. Cave Don Cave Mrs Harland Bleitz seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services Sunday at 3 30 p m at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Charles Hawkins officiating.

Mrs. C. S. Lemmon Dies at 83 in Washington

Mrs. C. S. Lemmon, 83, of 527 South Iowa Avenue, died Thursday night May 19 1960 at Washington County Hospital after a four year illness. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Milan Thompson officiating. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born Margaret Applegate April 2 1877 Greensburg Ind she married C. S. Lemmon April 26 1900 and lived in Washington 60 years. Welch Quits FDA Post Amid Controversy

Dr. Henderson Welch resigns as FDA antibiotics chief effective immediately after Welfare Secretary Flemming demanded his departure. He denies wrongdoing in earning 287 242 outside income from drug publications while reviewing antibiotic safety in government service. The income stemmed from editorial board roles and a publishing firm stake under Senate investigation.

Graveside Rites Planned for Former Ainsworth Resident

Funeral services for Willis Chapel a lifelong Ainsworth resident will be held in Cedar Rapids Iowa Saturday afternoon at 1 30 CST. Graveside rites follow in the Ainsworth cemetery with Chapel aged about 93 the former resident. He died Monday May 16 while living with his daughter in Connecticut.

Atlas Missile Flies 9000 Miles In 52 Minutes Test

The Atlas missile with a dummy warhead reached 9000 miles off the tip of South Africa in 52 minutes. It lifted to about 1000 miles up and, if aimed northeast, could strike deep into the Soviet Union. The nose cone hit water near Prince Edward Island after passing between South America and Africa.
