The U S Consulate in Tabriz advised six American citizens to depart Azerbaijan as the situation deteriorates. They include three elderly missionary teachers, two nurses, and one doctor at an American hospital amid alleged threats to a consular agent.
Lt Col Jay Brown of the army air corps returns to Washington on terminal leave through August 17 when he will be discharged. He has served since before the war ending with 7 months and 4 days in army. He left Washington as captain of the 118th Cavalry in 1941 and later joined the air corps, much of his service in California. He and Mrs Brown recently toured the northwestern and Rocky Mountain states by car.
The Leon Beatty post of the American Legion will hold its regular meeting Tuesday at eight o'clock in the Legion rooms.
The procession and coronation of the Blessed Virgin statue took place at St James Church on Sunday May 19 at 3 PM. Mary Louise Redlinger served as May queen with attendants Mare ret Mary Dougall Doris Anne Gevock. crown bearer John Baker.
The Washington high school graduation class was honored at a union baccalaureate service at the Methodist church. Rev T E White preached that redemption is through Christ and faith, stressing life choices affect others and that knowledge comes from divine interpretation. The processional opened the service as the gray clad graduates took their places.
Charles Augustine, 78, died about 10 o'clock last night at Washington county hospital where he had been a patient since March 27 after a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Marsh Funeral Home Keota with burial at Valley Cemetery. A longtime Valley farmer, he was predeceased by his wife in 1921 and two children John and Eva. Surviving are a son Will of Valley and two daughters Mrs Lee Henry and Mrs Fred Sheetz of Keota.
President Truman visits William Jewell College in Liberty Missouri to receive an honorary degree at the 97th commencement. This marks his third honorary degree from Missouri schools since he entered the White House as Liberty tunes up for a historic day in a 4500 resident town.
The event ends with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Acolytes include Donny Duncan James Reelinger and Joseph Richard son served, with organists Dorothy Kos and Martha Whit taker providing music.
The service began with an invocation by Dr. George Kerr who also read scripture. Rev. Alfred Trenerry gave the opening prayer and Rev. A E Diddams delivered the benediction at the close. Special music included the senior girls sextet and the high school mixed chorus. Readings listed members Ellen Gray Martha Downing Alice Walker Shirley Dowell Marjorie Buwer Margaret McCall. Accompaniment by Peverly Brown and Ralph Young on piano and violin. Organist Edna Klein played the processional and recessional on the pipe organ.
Sir John Boyd Orr warned the world faces a continued food shortage for three to four years as FAO meets in Washington to plan relief. Former President Hoover urged a UN food administration to direct global distribution. President Truman also warned deficits will persist beyond the next harvest.
Washington relatives report the death of Mrs Lawrence Lowry daughter of former resident Mrs Harry Letts. Born in Chicago she spent most of her life there. She died suddenly last Monday at Chicago at age 48 and is survived by her husband.
Charles A. Singmaster, 74, prominent farmer and cattleman of Keota, died at 11 last night at Maplehurst after a month of illness. Survived by wife Sadie, two sons Samuel and Robert of Keota, daughters Mrs Don Peden of Athens Ohio and Mrs Clyde Stoutner Jr of Keota, sister Sophia Singmaster, and a late daughter Mrs George Mayer. Funeral arrangements handled by Marsh funeral home Keota. He was born April 2 1872 and married in 1894. his brother J O Singmaster died in 1957.
Historical note recalls cattle arriving in the Western hemisphere after Columbus in 1495, marking early livestock introduction to the Americas.
A special service at Washington United Presbyterian Church ordained new elders Jay Brewer Ralph Kleese John Owen Richard Stewart and Don Stour. Re-elected and installed were MC DeLong AL Duensing Marion George. Dr Kerr announced famine relief gifts totaling about 12 000 cans with an estimated retail value of 2000 to 2500.
Elsie J. Van Horne files for divorce from Herman L. Van Horne citing marriage in Lancaster Missouri on September 19 1943 and separation in February 1944. He allegedly was convicted of larceny and jailed in Oskaloosa. No children. She seeks alimony and restoration of maiden name Elsie Malloy. Attorney John C. Owen.
Community patriotic organizations will attend a memorial service at the Washington Methodist church next Sunday May 26 at the usual morning hour with Dr. Fred FE Miller delivering the sermon. Memorial day chairmen will meet Friday at 8 pm in the Legion rooms at city hall to finalize May 30 observance plans.
Mrs. Sarah S. George aged 78 widow of T O George died at 2 30 this morning at the county hospital after suffering a stroke on Sunday. Funeral services will be at two o clock Wednesday at L A Jones funeral home with Dr George Kerr of the United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. She was born June 9 1867 in Wheeling West Virginia to Alexander and Rachel Amos Coates. The family moved to Kansas when she was four in a covered wagon and she married June 17 1887 in Manhattan Kansas to Thomas Osborn George then lived on a farm in Kansas before moving on.
Cecil Maude Denison 50 died Saturday at her home from inhaling gas in a suicide tied to a long illness. Coroner Dr W S Kyle ruled death by own action. She had undergone an operation last March and suffered since, with funeral services set for Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at L A Jones funeral home.
Survived by a brother Frank Coates of Superior Nebraska and a sister Mrs Etta Forey of Boise Idaho. A number of nephews and nieces also survive. Her husband five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Washington May 20 President Truman won a five day rail strike truce by promising two railroad brotherhoods a wage increase above the 1.28 a day recommended by the fact finding board. Alvaniey Johnston president of the locomotive engineers said the assurance came in a telephone talk with Truman and A F Whitney head of the trainmen’s union. Johnston said the president gave definite assurance of more than the panel recommendation and the strike was postponed to Thursday 1 p m EST. John P Steelman reported some progress as unions and management met. Nearly one million members of 15 non operating brotherhoods begin a nationwide strike ballot though results were unavailable due to delays. The arbitration award of 186 cents an hour was challenged by those unions seeking 14 more cents.
Mrs. Mary Rosana Henke, 92, longtime Washington resident, died Sunday at 6:20 p.m. at her home on South Marion Avenue after a four year decline. A rosary will be held Tuesday at 8 p.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home. Funeral Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Father Urban officiating. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. She was born July 30, 1853 in Germany and came to the United States as a young woman. Surviving: four daughters Helen Mangold, Anna Witting of Washington, Ida McGraw of Boise, Idaho, Elizabeth Mars Boise, Idaho. two sons Anthony and Michael of Anthony, Kansas. eight grandchildren, one son Henry deceased. She had lived in Washington 28 years and was a member of St. James Church.
In Elm Grove cemetery burial for a daughter of David Milton Denison and Jane Rice Denison born February 18 1896 in Washington. She attended Washington public schools and leaves two brothers Charles and Dale Denison, both of Washington.
