The Washington Industrial Corporation launches a survey to gauge labor available in Washington and nearby areas for local industry. An application form appears elsewhere in the paper. Stock certificates held by Mr. Kehoe must be receipted for upon delivery.
The House Appropriations Committee reduced Commerce Department funding by about 18 percent for the new fiscal year. Notable trims include an $80 million cut to highway funds, a full elimination of $10,000 for Secretary Weeks’s hospitality, and a total approved bill of $1.121 billion, down from Eisenhower’s request and short of current-year appropriations.
President Eisenhower vetoed a postal pay increase that would have raised wages for about 500 000 postal workers by around 88 percent. He cited higher deficits and administrative problems from numerous pay rates, noting the bill would cost about 179 million dollars and backers expect a near 180 million bill. The veto follows a prior veto on a similar pay raise and leaves Congress to seek a fairer plan for postal field workers.
A former King Korn salesman Donald E. Duncan and Wilson Walker were jailed in Moline charged with possession of 80,000 stolen King Korn trading stamps valued at about 225 dollars. About 195,000 stamps had disappeared from the St Paul office. Warrants followed a report by district sales manager W T Leonard. The pair were nabbed after trying to sell the stamps to two filling station operators.
Marvin L. Rubin denied paying or receiving money tied to a Army uniform contract during Senate inquiries. Jerome Schlesinger testified Rubin paid him 150 for travel to Puerto Rico to straighten contract records. Julius Goldman, a Navy inspector, was suspended after saying Rubin paid him 50 weekly for three months in 1952.
DETROIT (UP) police report a group of teen aged youths controls a East Side neighborhood with a reign of terror. Twenty one youths were seized at a planned gang fight and released as witnesses feared testifying. Six charged with carrying concealed weapons were freed for lack of evidence. Police found home made bombs cutting tools chain pieces and improvised weapons on the youths.
A trailer truck loaded with hogs plowed into a line of vehicles during road resurfacing near Smithfield Virginia. Five people died including two sisters Olive Branch 58 and May Branch 63 of Smithfield and William Maxwell Copeland and his daughters Plassic Africa 9 and Gerdine Bennett 10 trapped in a truck cab. Coroner said it took four hours to extract bodies as wreckers cleared the wreckage and hogs lay along the highway.
The Washington county Saddle club hosts six other clubs for a trail ride and a public horse show Sunday near Lake Darling. The show begins at 1 p.m. with nine classes at the airplane landing strip on the lake’s south side. Trail ride starts at 10 a.m. with seven clubs from Henry, Louisa, Des Moines, Lee counties and Stockport and Bonaparte in Van Buren county as part of the Southeast Iowa Trail Ride association.
A car colliding with a school bus east of Odebolt Iowa killed 25 year old Albert Reinking of Schleswig and injured six others including Nemaha schools superintendent Charles Waterbury, Robert Braase and four children Elane Breen Lael Hansen Dennis Locks and Larry Ryan. The 1955 traffic death toll rose to 204.
The Morrell Chorus directed by Jack Moses performs at 8 p m in Washington Methodist Church under Fortnightly Music Dept auspices. All members are John Morrell & Co employees from Ottumwa. They rehearse for love of singing and receive no pay. A 6 30 p m dinner precedes the concert.
Air Force Secretary Harold E. Talbott told reporters in Washington that the United States is not in danger of losing air supremacy to the Soviet Union. He said the Air Force budget is adequate and that the program is under constant review despite Russian advances.
The Detroit River is identified as the world’s busiest waterway for global shipping traffic, reflecting its crucial role in international trade and regional industry.
Alberta Zieglowsky named valedictorian and Carol Zelinsky salutatorian at Washington high school Class Day. The program awarded multiple honors including Read ers Digest award and Danforth awards. National Honor Society recipients and annual presentation highlighted a day of ceremonies and student recognitions.
The Public Health Service reports 23 polio cases among families of Cutter vaccine recipients in California, with 11 adults and 1 death, adding to 59 additional child cases. The findings fuel the embargo on Cutter and slow the nationwide inoculation program as inspectors await data from Wyeth Laboratories and Pittman-Moore Co.
Four Texans were captured after their stolen car drifted off a dead end street following a pursuit by state and city officers. Driver Rosendo Basalbo age 21 and passenger Raymond Ruiz 15 from San Antonio were hospitalized. Oscar Trevino 17 of San Antonio and Thomas Ybarra 17 of Natalia were jailed for Illinois authorities.
Nineteen members from the Washington VFW Post and Auxiliary traveled to Knoxville to entertain veterans at the hospital. The women sponsored a dance for the residents while the men joined a smoker event. Attendees included Commander and Mrs. Harold Haifley and numerous couples.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Minick announce the purchase of the Maybelle Beauty Salon below the National Bank. It will be renamed Vogue Beauty Salon with Fileen Hammen as manager and operator. Assisting beauty operators include Mathena Nebel and Mrs. Isabelle Mottet, who brings five years’ Fairfield experience. Air conditioning added.
Salk polio vaccine will be given at Crawfordsville and St James schools Monday May 23 to first and second graders who have not yet received their first shot. Rural students absent can come at 9 a.m. Crawfordsville or 10 a.m. St James to receive inoculations.
