Soybean Plant Project Moves Forward With Local Team

Honeymead Products of Cedar Rapids plans a soybean processing plant on east town ground, with St. Lawrence Construction building structures and Rock Island Railway constructing a spur. Contractors expect four months to complete key units and plant operation by October first.

St James 8th Grade Graduates Honor Then and Now

The eighth grade class of St James school graduated in the church while Rev H J Corcoran awarded diplomas and attendance medals. Named graduates included Joan Campbell and Mary Lucille Heck among others with recipients of perfect attendance and merit certificates. A Washington high school portion notes 55 diplomas in a later ceremony with 13 boys and 42 girls, plus remarks by President Virgil M Hancher about future goals and continued learning.

W R C Plans Memorial Sprays Meeting Schedule

Women’s Relief Corps members meet at 6 39 p m Wednesday May 24 at the Davenport Democrat office on Main Street to gather arbor vitae for Memorial Day. If weather cancels, they meet Thursday morning from 10 00 a m to make sprays with a cooperative luncheon at noon and ask members to bring a dish to pass.

Laborers Wanted for Soybean Plant Work At Local Site

Mrs Albert Lay head of the local employment office says laborers are needed at the soybean plant for husky workers 16 and older and for older workers. Good wages are paid and applicants may go to the employment office or the plant site near the Rock Island coal chute. Wire fine enough to stretch eighty miles per pound is produced for electrical use.

Sergeant Brown of Keota Missing in Action in Italy

Sergeant John Q Brown tail gunner of a B 24 Liberator is reported missing in action in Italy. He enlisted in October 1942 and trained at Sheppard Field Inglewood and Tyndall Field. He served with the same crew since July 1943 and earned the Air Medal for raids over Germany Austria and Hungary. His parents, Mr and Mrs Bert Brown, were informed.

Bombing Force Hits Brunswick And Berlin Again

A 1500 aircraft Allied force including 750 Flying Fortresses and Liberators with equal fighter escorts attacked Berlin and Brunswick as part of a renewed western Europe invasion offensive after a weather pause. Allied bombers approached from west and northwest, engaging stiff Nazi resistance and signaling a continuation of heavy air assaults on strategic targets.

Hope Lt Hughes Lands Safely After Missing Over Germany

Mr and Mrs John Hughes received word Wednesday that their son Lt Hayden Hughes, reported missing over Germany by the war department, had landed safely. A fellow bomber pilot in the same squadron relayed details of engine trouble and a controlled descent before Hughes reportedly regained control and headed for a safe landing.

At Least Three Dead in Storms In Central Iowa

At least three killed and several injured as violent wind hail and thunderstorms swept central and western Iowa late Thursday into Friday. Leonard Elliott died attempting to save livestock from a flooded barn near Ames. Merrill Hoyt was killed in a separate incident as the storm caused extensive damage and disruption.

Three Teachers Sign Contracts For Next Year

Three teachers opted for positions in Washington schools for the next year and signed contracts. Edith Strait will become principal at Stewart elementary, Jean Westphal will teach third grade, and Bertha Ross will teach physical education for girls.

New Allied Thrust Advances Across New Guinea and Burma

General Douglas MacArthur announced a new 225 mile amphibious thrust up the New Guinea coast and Allied forces pushed toward Myitkyina in northern Burma. Wakde Island fell with light opposition as air bases were established to dominate Dutch New Guinea, while Stilwell’s units pressed toward Kamaing and Mo Kiang in the Mogaung valley.
