Reported by The Associated Press three U S army airmen crossed 560 miles from Paramshiru to Yetorofu in seven hours landing at 2 50 pm They prepared to continue toward Kasumigaura while authorities in Tokyo and Washington coordinate receptions.
Esther Schaefer, 14, daughter of A. J. Schaeffer, vanished from her Cedar Rapids home yesterday taking family jewelry, silverware and clothing. Her father believes she may have gone to Chicago to her mother or grandmother, Mrs Agnes Blair, who lives at 3749 West Sixty Fourth Street. Police seek the girl and items involved.
Chicago May 19 The National Confectioners Association opened its annual convention with an exposition showing candy making machinery. A 20 pound caramel and a 24 inch nougat are among the exhibits as Walter C Hughes notes Americans spend more than a billion dollars on candy each year.
Des Moines May 19 Iowa telephone companies plan to observe the 49th birthday of the telephone on June 2. The invention is attributed to Alexander Graham Bell then 29 years old in 1876 at the electrical workshop of Charles Williams 109 Court Street Boston. The building still exists.
E. Sullivan Atkins superintendent of schools is in serious condition with fractured skull and other injuries after a car overturned near the city limits. C. H. Krohling of Atkins and Mrs Jesse Cox were injured. Mrs Cox seriously hurt with multiple fractured ribs. Gaylen Steele and Clarence McGowen were bruised when their motorcycle was hit on the Marion boulevard. Three unidentified men suffered cuts and bruises after a machine plunged into a culvert near Centre Point. they received aid at a farmer’s home.
Cyrus E B Woods resigns as American ambassador to Japan citing family reasons. The resignation was tendered three weeks ago and he will depart Tokyo for Seattle on June 6 aboard the President McKinley. Japanese officials express regret at the loss of Woods and his services during a period of disaster relief.

Edward Vance, paroled from Mount Pleasant hospital, killed his divorced wife two weeks earlier in Davenport. His body was found Sunday in the Mississippi River, dressed in women’s clothing, with two bullet wounds in the head. Authorities believe the disguise was meant to aid escape before he shot himself and drowned.
President Coolidge resumed his duties today after a bronchial cold that began mid last week. Doctors say he remains slightly weak though able to work, with engagements canceled including a baseball charity game between the Washington Americans and the Quantico Marines and a delegate reception.

Virgil of Chicago is named president of the Western Grocer company to fill the vacancy left by the death of Frank C. Letts. At a May 3 special meeting W McCreedy was elected first vice president and general manager, overseeing manufacturing and wholesale branches. Frank K. Brewer of Albert Lea Minnesota was named second vice president.
Des Moines May 19 H E Stone today was appointed inspector of consolidated schools of Iowa by Miss May E Francis superintendent of public instruction. Stone was formerly superintendent of schools at Hartford Ia.
Senator Hiram Johnson said he released the South Dakota delegation and some others from any obligation to support him for president at the Cleveland convention, but he declined to elaborate on the announcement.
