The Fiftieth Iowa Volunteer Infantry Battalion under Col Olmsted will depart for Tampa Florida Saturday morning by the Rock Island Route via Chicago. The unit, formerly the Second Iowa National Guard, is ordered to requisition transportation immediately and begin mobilization for the voyage.
The Cadiz reserve squadron sails for the Philippines by end of May with 11,000 troops. Fatalities include Charles Floy and family in Preston and Mike Hines near Charlotte Iowa with others missing or injured. Widespread property destruction followed from Tipton Cedar County to Savanna Illinois and Osseo Wisconsin. Estimated losses run high with dozens of buildings barns and trees destroyed and telegraph lines down.
Reports from Milwaukee Antigo Madison Waterloo and surrounding towns describe a destructive cyclone and storm system on May 19. Travelers near Lanark and Linark area observed funnel clouds, large hail, and wrecked farm buildings. In Antigo a cyclone leveled homes and injured residents. Des Moines Ringgold county and nearby towns reported destroyed structures, injuries, and power outages.
