City Council Grants Licenses and Plans Sewer, Water Works

Mayor and council meet with about 200 in attendance. The city grants billiard hall licenses to Wim Schafer, T. J. Dempsey and John Ross, netting about 300. Sewer permits issued and a proposed sewer between Jake Hite and Jos Scranton debated. Water main extensions approved to cost ~2000 with 10 percent interest anticipated. other ordinances referred for study.

Sunday Letters From City Maids Inspire Bold Elopement Hopes

Two local maids wrote letters to gentlemen but failed to sign them. If the recipients can detect handwriting or identify the authors, their chances for love or elopement are sealed. The letters feature verses paired with ribbon colors, concluding with a bold invitation to elope.

Iowa National Guard Encampment Set for Ottumwa

The next annual state encampment of the Iowa National Guards will be held in Ottumwa from August 8 to 15, with our company D set to participate.

Hall to open restaurant and confectionery in Temple Building

J. M. Hall and family of Winterset have located here. He will establish a restaurant with confectionery and fruit store on the north side in one of the Temple Building rooms. Some repairs will be made before opening.

Mrs Norton Hosts Private Recital With Notable Students

Mrs D J Norton held a private concert for about one hundred friends in her north square rooms last evening. The program impressed as the best yet, with a fine piano solo of Allegro Largo from concerto op 15 by Beethoven. Other performers included Nellie Morryson, Mary Harding, Chas Howe, Bessie Eichelberger, Eva Hunt, Ollie Campbell, Ethel Winters and Jessie Smouse.

Wolf capture near West Chester hinted by auditor

A man famed by name as if from a French opera visited the Auditor's office this morning. The auditor, startled, found the man's name twice on a receipt and spelled correctly, confirming two nearly full-grown wolves captured by Ai and his dogs near West Chester. Note says another wolf expected tomorrow.

Star Reading Circle closes season with varied program

The Star Reading Circle of young ladies ended its season with essays by Olive Scranton readings by Lizzie Dawson declamations by Arion Scott and Ola Hamilton poems by Edna Young and Anna Coulter with a book review by Alice Rownd Anna Dawson gave brief biographical sketches of members light refreshments followed. A G A K L committee accepted Palma band for Decoration Day and ministers will be asked to preach memorial sermons. An optician visit at W Morris jeweler store on May 26 offers glasses at regular prices with fit guaranteed and no exam charges. Several city school vacancies are expected after term end.
