Services Sunday For Robert Pierce 39 Of Columbus Junction
Funeral services for Robert Pierce of Columbus Junction will be held at 3 p m Sunday at the Methodist Church with Rev George Pennington presiding and burial in Columbus City Cemetery. Pierce 33 was killed in an accident Friday when a tractor and brush cutter collision threw him into the cutter. He was born February 8 1918 near Columbus Junction to Mr and Mrs Chester Pierce. He married Verlee Smith on December 5 1945 and is survived by his widow a son Richard a daughter Rita his parents a brother James of Atlantic and a sister Mrs Harold Piercy of Burlington.

Woman Charged In Des Moines Hit Run Crash
Mary Lou Towery 27 a key club operator was charged with hit and run after a traffic crash that hospitalized Sandra Ely. Towery was arrested about an hour after the incident at her tavern. James Van Horn 34 was charged as an accessory for denting the car hood and with intoxication. Towery faces additional counts for failing to aid the injured and driving without a license.

Boy Survives 23 Hours in 10 Inch Well Shaft Rescue
Benny Hooper, 7, was entombed for nearly a full day in a 10 inch wide well shaft in Manorville New York. He survived thanks to an oxygen line and an air pocket formed by his jacket. Firefighters and volunteers labored through exhaustion until rescue at 7 31 Friday night. He rests at Bay View Hospital in Mastic Beach and faces pneumonia risk though recovering well.
