Painters in a downtown Manhattan apartment heard shots as two projectiles hit the window. Police learned the fired items were rivets accidentally discharged by a construction worker loading a riveting machine, not bullets.
Soviet youth paper Komsomolskaya Pravda reveals Lenin on his death bed accused Stalin of rudeness and power hunger. Lenin's harsh last letters urged removing Stalin as party secretary in favor of a more patient loyal leader. Government promotes Lenin icon while diminishing Stalin influence.
Funeral services for Mrs. J. J. Pritchard 76 of Wayland are planned for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Wayland Methodist Church. The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Wayland Cemetery. Survivors include her husband Rev. J. J. Pritchard a son Wesley of Danville a daughter Mrs. Mark Rhea of Arcada California and five grandchildren.
ALBIA Iowa AP Jack Freedman a about 40 Chicago salesman was killed Thursday night when the car in which he was riding left the road on a curve of U S 34 four miles east of Albia and overturned. The driver George Peeples 30 also of Chicago would be charged with reckless driving. The car was going too fast for the curve. An inquest was scheduled for later today Peeples was not seriously hurt.
Rev Basil McBee pastor of the Associate Presbyterian Church will speak at Washington High School baccalaureate Sunday at 8 p m in the new gymnasium. Several local ministers assist with special music by the high school girls glee club Enid McConnell will be the organist. Other ministers include Halsey Wakelin Harley Gelhaus E L Haney and William J Grossheim.
Generalissimo Francisco Franco moves to strengthen Spain's fundamental laws amid student riots and industrial strikes. A Falange-led committee will draft new fundamental laws to bind the state, aiming to unify Monarchists and Falangists and stabilize Franco's 20 year rule.
Washington County extension director Tom Robb notes frost damage in clover shows as leaf darkening and alfalfa bleaching. Farmers questioned blight but Robb says most affected fields will recover.
Des Moines reversed daylight saving plans 60 hours before clocks would advance. Four City Council members cited confusion after a 3-2 vote to switch to daylight time, but publication of the ordinance was delayed and effect delayed to next year for now.
Former President Harry S. Truman arrived in Rome to a 400 strong crowd at the station and voiced opinions on Vatican representation and Soviet arms cuts. He praised hospitality and said he would judge Soviet leaders upon arrival in the United States.
Four year old Richard Rudd, son of Otis and wife, was struck by a car driven by Marie Kless in Burlington. He died at Mercy Hospital shortly after the incident.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee defeated a bid to deny aid to allies shipping strategic goods to Iron Curtain nations and rejected a cut of nearly one billion dollars from the administration’s foreign aid program. The vote was close with 10 of 32 members absent and a potential revival planned for Tuesday.
A rural Grandview couple Charles Leroy Duncan 25 and Alice Cora Duncan 22 and Robbie Gene Orr 21 of near Columbus Junction died Thursday night in a head on collision on Iowa 92 west of Grandview. Orr’s car burst into flames. a passing motorist put it out. Orr funeral set for Sunday at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction with burial in Indian Creek cemetery. An inquest by Louisa County coroner Stacy will be held early next week.
District Judge Harvey Uhlenhopp ruled the $175 monthly cap on federal aid to dependent children unconstitutional. He noted a six child family needs $278.83 monthly, and the limit covered only 63 percent of needs, while smaller families would receive full coverage. The ruling follows an appeal by Pearl Collins and reflects arguments over uniform operation of laws guiding welfare support.
Des Moines will host Armed Forces Day events including a 10 am parade with tanks anti aircraft guns and field pieces. Helicopters and F80 Shooting Stars F84 Thunderjets will perform flyovers over the route. The Red Horse Armory dedication follows a Meet the Guard dinner with Gov Hoegh and Brig. Gen. Wendall Ridout age 16 a Greenfield Iowa sophomore drowned while swimming with two companions in the city reservoir near Greenfield on the eve of commencement exercises Ridout son of Mr and Mrs Wayne Ridout Fontanelle Iowa and Jerry Queck attempted rescue but Ridout fought him off as the trio joined a high school picnic breaking up at the reservoir later reporting details.
Drake University men staged a panty raid on the Delta Zeta Sorority house described as abortive by Dean of Men Edward V. Voldseth. Police called it larceny of two nightgowns a slip and a brassiere while a reverse raid drew 50 girls outside a men's dorm.
Iowa senator Rourke B. Hickenlooper battles a restricted campaign schedule as farm bill debates delay appearances. He cancels meetings for Washington votes but keeps a Cedar Falls Lions Club lunch as his only fixed event this week while campaign directors push turnout in districts. Milroy and Murphy guide the bid with past election experience shaping strategy and stateside tours planned in Lenox and southern Iowa as unrest grows in farming communities.
The Senate rejected an amendment to strike all mandatory price rise provisions for barley, grain sorghums, oats and rye, clearing the way for an 8 percent price support rise this year and parity-linked changes next year. A separate move would freeze corn, peanuts and wheat parity at current levels for another year. An earlier administration amendment to sell low grade surplus wheat at livestock feed prices was approved.
