May 18 report from San Francisco notes Mrs McKinley's improved condition after a tense day. Doctors caution the crisis is not passed and say it may be at least forty eight hours before safety can be declared. President McKinley may attend today’s Ohio launching if possible.
A fire broke out in shaft No 2 at the Atlantic mine in Iron Belt Wisconsin on Thursday night trapping 150 workers. Paddy Raper and Gustav Willman warned crews and led them through smoke for 500 feet to safety. The mine is shut down and losses are expected to be considerable.
The Illinois State Dental Society closed its convention with M. I. Hanaford named president and A. H. Peck secretary. Springfield will host the next gathering on the second Tuesday in May. In Pittsburgh, Westinghouse Machine Company announces a 9 hour workday for 1,400 employees starting yesterday.
In Watertown Wisconsin on May 17 Joseph Busert killed himself by filling his mouth with powder placing a fuse between his lips and lighting it His head exploded instantly in a grisly self inflicted blast the incident was reported the following day.
Chicago May 18 report states George H. Phillips has practically closed out his May corn deal as traders watched the corn pit yesterday.
Emma Rodgers, operator of a resort alleged as the meeting site for conspirators, testifies before the Grand Rapids grand jury in May. The inquiry centers on a water works scheme with Mayor Perry as a cen ema in the sensational tale.
A campus clash in Champaign between University of Hinds students and circus workers left three students badly beaten and a Champaign man injured. K W Ward from Bentonville was knocked insensible and robbed. A W Amen H T Graber and George Temple were also hurt. The fight started over the students' college yell and escalated as showmen fought to protect their wagons and fled after a canvas man fired a revolver.
Evansville selected for the 1902 gathering of the Indiana State Medical Society. Dr J M McLean Moulder named president and Dr D Stevenson secretary by the nominating committee. Officers slated include Dr A W Brayton of Indianapolis president and Dr J B Berteling of South Bend vice president. John A Wyeth and Dr G W McCorkey spoke on the last day. a grand ball drew hundreds and dazzled attendees.
Chicago reports yesterday's scores across the major leagues and Western Association. Notable results include Brooklyn 10 over Cincinnati 9, New York 4 by Chicago 0, Cleveland 6 over Detroit 4, Boston 7 over Baltimore 2, Chicago 7 over Milwaukee 6, and Fort Wayne 8 over Dayton 4.
Mrs Ethel Costello, formerly a nurse here, inherits about 300000 from the uncle of her late husband in South America. She faces a flood of begging letters marriage proposals and offers of service in handling her property, with hundreds burned unread.

The National Soldiers' Home in Marion Indiana reports its seven thousandth admission. Since opening March 15 1890 the facility has cared for 10000 veterans including readmissions and temporary-at-post men.
Mrs. Lyman J. Gage died at the secretary of the treasury's Washington residence after a nine week illness. She was 58, born in Albany, married in Denver in 1887, and is survived by her husband and a daughter from a former marriage. Funeral plans set for Rose Hill cemetery near Chicago.
Police in New York investigate the death of Rev. Edward T. Phillips of Hazleton Pennsylvania. The priest known for pacifism in miners’ strikes was found decomposed in a Ninth Avenue room. In Richmond Indiana, John Cadwallader's suit for 5000 damages against Panhandle Railroad was dismissed and refiled against Grand Rapids and Indiana after he said freezing cars left him ill on a Fort Wayne to Richmond ride. Justice of the Peace Lockman tied two marriages in fifteen minutes across two venues.
General W John Porter aged 80 in Morristown New Jersey is dying after a long diabetes illness His son and daughter in law from New York City are at his bedside Porter once faced a military court martial that cashiered him for 16 years and barred him from trust or profit positions The trial led to a review and ultimate exoneration Porter was charged over delays in August 1862 orders to Bristoe Station and a late move on August 20 1862 with McDowell.

He lived with a woman believed to be his wife who vanished. first finger of his left hand is missing. In Monroe Erie area a fire destroyed several shops causing about 10000 dollars in losses.
Grand Rapids May 18 Edwin F Uhl former assistant secretary of state and ambassador to Germany under Cleveland died shortly after noon yesterday after nearly a year of illness including Brights disease He was born in 1841 near Avon Springs New York and moved to Michigan as a boy graduating from the University of Michigan at age 20 He settled in Grand Rapids in 1871 and later served as assistant secretary of state and ambassador to Germany during Cleveland's second term
Robert D. Wagstaff, marine editor of the Detroit Free Press for about a decade, died in Detroit on Wednesday from tuberculosis. Unmarried, he was born in Buffalo in 34 years ago and regarded as a leading authority on Great Lakes shipping.
Davenport May 18 The Iowa State Medical society has elected officers with J Z Guthrie of Dubuque as president TH L Treynor of Council Bluffs as secretary and G L Skinner of Cedar Rapids as treasurer.
Chicago grain and produce quotes show mixed wheat and corn, with May wheat around 72 3/4c and July near 71 3/4c, oats around 29 1/2c, and rye firm. Live stock markets in East Buffalo and St Louis reflect higher lambs and mixed hog prices. Milwaukee reports firmer wheat and steady oats. overall market activity noted by price ranges and receipts.
In Albany on May 18 a warm rain cooled tensions after deadly clashes. 600 additional troops joined the Ninth Regiment to guard streets and cars while both union and nonunion workers moved into the city. In Troy the strike ended with an open line and 20 cents an hour. Leroy Smith, shot during the unrest, survived and said he blamed no one but himself.
