Nuclear blasts free gas in Colorado test Rio Blanco affair
Three 30 kiloton nuclear devices buried underground near Rifle Colorado were detonated after an eight minute countdown to release natural gas. Officials said the blast created a massive underground reservoir and would yield 20 billion cubic feet of gas over 20 years, vastly more than conventional wells. Evacuations were voluntary for ranchers within a 14 mile radius as environmentalists argued radioactivity risks though authorities claimed the risk was negligible. The experiment faced court challenges and involved CER Geonuclear Corp and the AEC as partners.
