Abandon Efforts To Reach Trapped Boy By Digging Tunnel
In Manorville New York rescuers halted tunnel efforts to reach Benny Hooper a 7 year old trapped in a 21 foot well shaft for over 19 hours. A derrick and bucket were sought as they tried a lateral tunnel 15 feet away using hydraulic pumps hampered by crumbling sand. The boy’s hand remained the only visible part at times and the rescue continued amid shifting sand and rising crowd noise as efforts persisted to within two feet of him.
