A panic at the Barnum & Bailey circus in Newark caused by a frightened horse led to seven children injuries, two serious, including Helen Comisky 7, who suffered a fractured jaw. Crowds fled into yards and windows as frightened patrons trampled carriages and scattered.
In Ahuejukla Jalisco a mysterious illness kills about ten people daily. Affected residents fall ill quickly with symptoms lasting only hours before death. Local authorities report no known cause or cure. The rapid fatalities alarm residents and prompt medical observers to investigate.
The National Association of Manufacturers opened its fourteenth annual convention at the Waldorf in New York. It adopted a resolution mourning former president J W Van Cleave and focused on fire prevention interstate commerce and immigration with a keynote on reducing accidents to workers.

The interior department sent Kerby a dismissal by special delivery. He says the action was expected and that he is relieved to leave conditions in the department. He leaves the charges to public judgment, asserting the people will decide if he acted treacherously or patriotically.
Dr. B. Clark Hyde was found guilty of murdering Colonel Thomas H. Swope and was sentenced to life in a state peniten tiary. The jury deliberated sixty hours before verdict. Hyde showed composure as Judge Latshaw pronounced the sentence, while Mrs. Hyde comforted him. The Swope family remained restrained as the guilty verdict was read.
San Francisco May 17 Tex Rickard has been agreed to referee the Jeffries Johnson bout set for July 4 in boxing history.
Chicago markets report steady hog prices with light hogs trading around 9.50 to 9.65 and mixed packers near 9.30 to 9.671. Cattle yard receipts around 2500 and sheep around 12000 show steady conditions. Grain firm at Beach-Wickham Grain Company with listings at 544 and 545 Postal Telegraph Building.

Estimated receipts show a slow market at yesterday's prices. Reeves reports cows and heifers 2500 Market quoted with ranges from 5 7 to 8 60 for cows, 2 80 to 7 35 for heifers, Texas steers 5 00 to 6 40, stockers and feeders 4 00 to 6 65, western cattle 5 10 to 7 25.
Estimated receipts show a weak market at yesterday's close. Native sheep range 4.00 to 7.10, Western sheep 4.90 to 7.10, yearlings 6.75 to 5.00, lambs 6.00 to 9.00, Western lambs 7.00 to 9.10.
Early trading shows bulk items steady around 9.60 to 9.70 with light activity 9.40 to 9.75 and mixed lots bidding 9.35 to 9.77. Heavy shipping grades hold 9.35 to 9.75 while roughs run 9.35 to 9.50. Cattle slower and weaker, sheep and lambs down about 10.
Juneau Alaska May 17 An unusual disaster struck the whaler Sorenson owned by the Tyee Whaling company of San Francisco as a whale’s tail crushed the hull off Cape Carmaney causing the ship to sink in four minutes. All crew escaped in small boats and were later picked up by a reserve crew.
King George receives Theodore Roosevelt in London as the body of King Edward VII lies in state at Buckingham Palace. The procession to Windsor begins, with multiple services and the Big Ben tolling every fifteen seconds. Roosevelt's throat is examined by Dr. Thompson after a dinner with embassy staff.
