Wounded Garberick Interrogated as Meacham Speaks

Special to Evening Journal Brighton May 17 preliminary wound exam showed bullet not fully probed due to danger. Garberick resting easy and physician optimistic. Meacham in county jail gave his account claiming Garberick pursued him for money and drew a revolver prompting the fatal shot in an Oakville Mediapolis dispute.

Monument for famed horse "Gipsy Boy" unveiled near Winfield

P E O Meeting Date Change And Local Social Notes

The P E O society will meet next Saturday afternoon at 2 30 with Mrs A R Dewey instead of Thursday. Twenty one school youths spent the day with Miss Vera Van Sickle at her home five miles north of the city. Rain altered plans to go to Coppock. Mrs Majorie Work arrived from Healdsburg California for a visit with her son James Work and relatives. Rev J R Logue travels to Tarkio Missouri for the Mission committee and General Assembly next week. Billy McCall is visiting from Crawfordsville today.

Washington May 17 An order from Secretary Long curtails navy news to the press directing that only official bulletins unrelated to current movements may be published. The move comes after newspapers exposed campaign plans, prompting concern over information aiding Spain.

Senate debates war revenue bill and projected funds

In Washington on May 17 the Senate began debate on the war revenue measure. Allison opened for the finance committee in Morrill’s absence, noting the bill would produce about 151.5 million dollars, with total revenues estimated around 298.1 million after combining effects from 1897 receipts and pending items. The bill was set as unfinished business to pass soon. The House vetoed a private claims jurisdiction bill from President McKinley, which the Senate committee reported as unfinished business. In Key West, Uncas headed toward Havana after departing Sunday at 1 a.m.

Chamberlain Speech Sparks Commons Debate

In London on May 17 the Birmingham foreign policy speech by Chamberlain secretary of state for the colonies stirred strong reaction in the Commons. Sir William Vernon Harcourt announced a forthcoming foreign office vote debate as the country seeks discussion. Michael Davitt asked if Chamberlains remarks on Russian promises affected ties with Russia but the question was not allowed.

Gloomy Assault Sparks Murder Charge in Springfield

Joe Morris attacked Lucy Murray in her home and threw a burning lamp at her. Mrs Murray escaped, Henry Cleveland stopped the blaze and was badly wounded. Cleveland remains hospitalized with life threatening injuries as authorities consider murder charges.

Public School Attendance Surges in Italy 1870 to Present

Telegram notes report Italy’s public school attendance rose from 201632 to 2471658.
