Tips for Managing Pigs on Pasture

Washington County Extension Associate Merritt Canady outlines pasture management for hog producers. Key points include well fenced pastures with proper drainage, one acre per 20 to 25 pigs, 8 to 10 square feet of shade per pig, and a forage mix of 75 percent legume and 25 percent grass kept at 5 to 6 inches. Feeding should allocate 75 percent grain and 25 percent supplements, with one self feeder hole for 4 to 5 pigs and one watering cup for 20 to 25 pigs. Protein targets are 16 percent for up to 75 pounds, 14 percent for 75 to 125 pounds, and 12 percent for 125 pounds to market.
