Vernon Harootunian, 20, on shore leave in Los Angeles, said he would return to sea after he struck a row of palm trees with his car on Friday night. He escaped injury and noted he would rather be at sea than risk on land.
Washington county rural school graduation exercises are planned for Thursday evening May 21 at 8 o'clock in the Washington Methodist church. Superintendent Lester B Krabill says Arthur Carpenter assistant state superintendent of public instruction will present honors. The program includes singing by rural choirs, scholarship and citizenship awards, and raffles. Readings and music feature a variety of local student performers and eighteen seniors will be recognized for scholastic achievement.

Bernie Engelhoeven age 3, son of Mr and Mrs Garland Engelhoeven, drowned late Friday after tumbling through a collapsed cover into a 30 foot well on his uncle farm southwest of Oskaloosa. His aunt Mrs John Kempe was present but could not save him. a neighbor recovered the body with rope and ladder.

Washington veteran lawyer E. D. Morrison Sr. was feted at a YMCA dinner marking 50 years in Iowa law. The 77 year old, born in Chicago, studied under Marsh Bailey, earned a Drake University degree, and joined his son E. D. Morrison Jr. in a long practiced firm. City officials and county judges attended.

Des Moines report says a month old Freddie Gay nearly drowned Friday night when his sister Judy left him in a tub to watch a televised fight. Neighbor Mary Dixon revived the infant with artificial respiration after he was found nonresponsive.
