Des Moines district OPA chief Walter Kline says about 60 000 pounds of illegally acquired meat have been found in 30 locker plants serving under 300 residents across 64 counties. He predicts hundreds more will be questioned as the probe expands to all 500 plants and notes an estimated total 500 000 pounds stored in lockers statewide.
Waterloo hosts 39 Jamaican workers for asparagus cutting and processing at Reinbeck Canning Co. One hundred Mexican nationals arrive to assist with planting thinning and weeding canning crops and hybrid corn. Iowa Canning Co at Vinton and Pella and Marshalltown provide crews. Pioneer Hi Bred Corn Co supplies rest for breeding fields.
The Des Moines River went out of its banks at Ottumwa on Tuesday and rose from 10.5 feet late in the day. An increase of one foot was expected. If rainfall ceases above Ottumwa, the crest should arrive early today. It was raining in Ottumwa.
Iowa officials including Gov Robert Biluc and Attorney General John Rankin were urged by the Anti Saloon League to enforce all liquor laws. Des Moines and other cities face widespread sale of drinks by the drink, despite state prohibitions. The league pressed sheriffs counties attorneys and mayors to act during postwar readjustments.
Mrs. Minerva Earnhart aged 83 of Wraymore Nebraska died at 12 30 p m at her nephew and niece Karl and Olive Mikseh home near Ainsworth after a visit she fell seriously ill. She had lived in Nebraska for many years and was born west of Washington. Funeral arrangements are handled by L A Jones with burial planned at Wymore.
A survey of potential jobs for returning veterans will be conducted in Washington County. The Veterans Service Committee aims to identify needs and set up an organization to assist veterans entering civilian life. The group, led by L. J. Kehoe, will prepare a questionnaire and campaign plan with public support sought.
San Bernardino letter from Dorothea Simmons informs Ifugh McCleery of the death of Hugh Rupp formerly of Washington and a Spanish American War veteran in Company D. Rupp died May 6 at the U S Veterans hospital in San Fernando California at age 67 of a heart attack. Spanish American rites with firing squad and Taps were held at the funeral service. Burial was
At the Odd Fellows meeting in Lemmon a fifty year member, Mr. Lemmon, received a 50 year jewel before 66 members. Ralph Zeck led the ceremony with Vernon Wittrig presenting the jewel. A buffet supper followed, served by a Rebekah lodge committee led by Mrs. Lloyd Master.
Mr and Mrs M D Atkinson learned from their son Sergeant Charles Atkinson that the earlier missing in action report was a mistake. The message received this morning said all well and safe and sent greetings on Mother's Day. The war department had advised they were missing since April twenty third.
London May 16 The allied powers have agreed on military control of Germany but not on specific occupation zones Prime Minister Churchill and spokesmen told Commons. Churchill said Britain's policy aligns with US plans announced May 11 by Secretary Stimpson for joint control by the United States Britain France and Russia. He added Eisenhower and Montgomery discussed the control issue before the Commons meeting fueling talk Montgomery could become Britain's representative on the allied control commission, opposite Eisenhower.
County war finance chairman G. KE Mace reports that wet weather did not hinder the seventh war loan drive started Monday. Mrs. Frank Longwell completed her town canvass on South Iowa Avenue pledging an average of 319 dollars in war bonds, helping countywide quota prospects.
Calcutta May 16 UP two British forces mopping up along the Prome Rangoon trail were reported within 20 miles of a juncture today. One force moving north from Rangoon cleared Charrawaddy and pressed toward the other advancing southwest from Prome. East patrols crossed the east bank of the Sittang near Mokpalin. West the 82nd West African division occupied Gwa.
Allied troops push through bloody house to house fighting on Okinawa as Marines near Shuri and Naha. Mindanao reported partially liberated with near hand to hand battles around Davao City as forces press toward remaining pockets of resistance.
The destroyer escort Frederick C. Davis was sunk in the Atlantic by an enemy submarine with heavy casualties. Commanded by Lt. James R. Crosby of Seattle, he is reported missing. The action occurred days before Germany's surrender, per navy release dated May 16.
Washington high school shifts Class Day to Thursday to avoid conflicting with the Little Six track meet in Ottumwa Friday. The program starts in the morning with T. L. Brookhart as speaker, plus band numbers and flag ceremonies to honor Memorial Day.

Bertha May Woods Haifley died at 3 30 am at the county hospital after months of illness. Funeral 2 30 pm Saturday at Shermans Funeral Home with Dr Fred B Miller and Rev Robert Stevens. Paris May 16 1945 SHAEF announced no German government is recognized and Doenitz remains the de facto head of the German high command. Doenitz and chosen officers are used to expedite disarmament demobilization and eventual dissolution of the high command.
Rev Bernard Bancroft retired missionary from Mendoza Philippines will speak Thursday at 8 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. He will share moving pictures and the latest word from the Philippine islands and answer questions about the country and people. All are invited.
At Monday evening drills 17 members of the State Guard headquarters company received attendance ribbons for 60 percent or more of the year’s drills. Henry Wagenknecht had a perfect record with 53 drills. others reached 62 percent. several members listed by name. This week 88 of 46 members attended. three recruits joined, raising potential strength to 49 after tests.
