In Albany on May 16 the Traction strike prompted 2000 soldiers to converge in the city as 2500 more prepare for Troy. Non union workers escorted to the Quail Street barn faced stones and saber threats while mobs and militia clashed without fatal outcomes.
San Francisco reports Mrs. McKinley in a serious condition at the Scott residence with officials noting no immediate danger but a potential decline. President McKinley will return to Washington direct when she can travel, cabinet members aware of the grave illness and public sympathy pouring in nationwide.
Two blocks up State Street a clever military ruse blocked the downtown crowd. Tenth battalion troops hidden on Chapel Street halted the pursuing mob with fixed bayonets as the cavalry escort rode by. Helena Montana May 16 The state attorney general ordered all counties to close every gaming house and threatened action for neglect of duty. This marks a radical reform and the first time since the discovery of gold that faro has ceased in Montana.
Authorities were informed of the death of Joseph Seitz ten miles south of Owatonna Minnesota on May 14. Investigation found he died by his own action, drinking carbolic acid, with the body decomposed and the face and throat eaten away by the acid, possibly two weeks dead.

Washington May 15. Union leaders from the Machinery and Allied Metal Trades signaled a strike set for May 20 in shops not granting a nine hour day while preserving ten hour pay. Participants include James O Connell John Mulholland L R Thomas E J Lynch and Samuel Gompers.
Secretary Devens outlines a 1900 joint agreement between the National Metal Trades' Association and the International Association of Machinists to settle grievances by arbitration rather than strikes. He notes a 54 hour week starting May 20 and that wage talks were referred to arbitration. The May 11 conference failed to resolve the wage demand.
President McKinley arrives with cabinet, troops, and naval units in a grand San Francisco welcome. Topeka jury finds Mrs Carrie Nation guilty of breaking into Bo Murphy's saloon. Sentencing due today with expectation of fines and costs. Nation's defense argued insanity. verdict surprised many as acquittal was anticipated. Other briefs report separate incidents in Michigan City Hartford City Springfield Fort Wayne and St Joseph involving labor disputes and strikes.
