City water workers will flush fire hydrants across Washington starting next Tuesday. Residents should anticipate low water pressure and rusty water until completion as crews move from the northwest area clockwise around the city, per City Water and Light Superintendent Marvin Glandon.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce Retail Merchants Bureau will gather at Winga's Cafe Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. Chairman Frank Pierce urges all members to attend. Plans for Ridiculous Day will be the main topic of discussion.
Wayne Herdlicka, photographer for the Palm Beach Times, received an Honorable Mention at the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards luncheon in Washington D.C. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dale Herdlicka of Ainsworth. He is a former part time employee of the Evening Journal.
Dr. Richard Leazenby joins Washington Veterinary Clinic with Dr. Keith Miller. Currently from Richland, he will begin work at 1414 E. Washington St. next week. A 1972 University of Missouri at Columbia graduate and Mt. Moriah native, Leazenby and wife Kathy have three infant children.
State Auditor Lloyd Smith urged a grand jury to probe alleged conflict of interest in Woodbine Community School District. An audit covering 1972 to 1976 found board contracts exceeding 5,000 dollars were awarded without bidding. Former member Dean Stephany and current chair Robert Schroeder allegedly benefited. Harrison County Attorney John W. Kellogg Jr. requested the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation review.
Defense attorney James Updegraff argued Frazer 25 was with his brother or wife at the time of the December killing of Sheila Foley 16. In Allamakee County District Court the trial moved on a venue change. The state alleges Frazer killed Foley whose nude body was found December 10 near Oelwein. Testimony resumes Monday.
Lowell Thomas and the News ends its long run on air after 46 years. Thomas, 84, quips that retirement is not in the plans as he departs, having first spoken for the program on September 29, 1930. He has two more books in the works, including reminiscences and a General Jimmy Doolittle volume.
Handwriting expert casts doubt on Hughes will, suggesting no valid will exists. Dietrich seeks probate hearing cancellation as scrutiny of eight contested documents widens with new forged or dated entries, some from Beverly Hills and even England.

President Ford addressed over 1,000 at Flint’s 14th Street station urging victory in Michigan on Tuesday. He and Betty Ford rode a Presidential Special through six Michigan cities to blunt Reagan momentum, stressing the need to win in his home state and promising to uphold his record in the next four years.
The Iowa House approved 68 to 2 a measure empowering the DEQ to issue permits for wastewater discharges under federal acts and to extend the DEQ Water Quality Commission authority. The bill aims to cut pollutants, protect streams, and expand water use efficiency while noting potential cost savings for communities.
Hiram Fricke was shot in the head while parked along I-80 east of Des Moines. Velma Price, 23, was charged with assault with intent to commit murder and held without bond. Authorities said the pair argued during travel and Fricke was shot after they exited the car.
More than 74,000 attended a Billy Graham event at Seattle's Kingdome, with 5,000 turned away. The stadium, designed for 65,000, was filled to capacity as 4,000 stood or sat on the floor. Johnny Cash and June Carter were special guests. Graham could not invite a public "come forward" moment due to overflow.
A fact finder's report was accepted by both the Kirkwood Community College faculty and the board, likely ending five months of negotiations. The deal covers 160 faculty members with a 7.2 percent average pay increase, excludes clerical, administrative and custodial staff, and totals about 172000 dollars for next year. Ratification by the board is expected soon. Grievance procedures and leave days are also outlined in the agreement.

Washington High School confirms no school approved skip days for senior students. Principal Burge Hammond urges parents to contact the school with questions about year end activities. Senior Class Day is May 24 at 2 00 p m with practice that morning. Commencement is May 25 at 8 00 p m with practice that morning. The 1976 Hi Life will be issued after class day May 24. Senior year report cards may be picked up June 2 from 1 15 p m at the principal's office or mailed if a stamped self addressed envelope is left.
