In Dallas Texas Deputy Sheriffs L W Patman and Buddy Weber uncovered the suspect beneath the kitchen sink cabinet while serving an arrest warrant. The man was curled up between drain pipes, ending a search that first looked in every other place.
About 300 Veterans of Foreign Wars and auxiliary members from 23 posts in southeastern Iowa travel to Washington for the annual first Iowa VFW district convention. Highlights include the officers election, auxiliary sessions at 1 p.m., and a joint entertainment social hour.
The United Steelworkers and United States Steel Corp adjourned wage negotiations indefinitely after a three hour session. A USW official hinted at an 18 to 25 cent an hour raise, a figure the union leader labeled unauthorized. Negotiations at Youngstown, Ohio and Pittsburgh set the pattern for the industry and were left open for either side to call again. Also, Charles Helfrich, 41, appeared before Justice Dick Hotle on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Three United States Air Force planes crashed in flames near Hemsbach Germany. Two C119 flying boxcars and a US jet were involved. An eye witnesses accounts say a jet plowed into the transports sending all three to earth with some crew bailing out too low for parachutes to open.
The Virgin Island group comprises fifty separate islands. The set centers on a cluster in a defined maritime region, with each island contributing to the archipelago's geography and identity.
Mrs George W Hamilton, 57, was charged with first degree murder in the Thursday shooting death of her husband. Police say the charge follows an overall investigation and that Mrs Hamilton has not confirmed or denied the slaying. A paraffin test showed nitrate on her hands, though officials caution such tests are not conclusive.
Daily Vacation Bible School at the Christian church runs June to 19 inclusive with ten sessions from 9:00 to 11:30 Monday through Friday. Mrs. Glenn Holden named director and a three department program for ages four through sixth grade.
Scott Blankenhorn 67 was found dead in bed at his farm east of Columbus Junction. Coroner says heart ailment caused death. Survived by widow Maude George. three daughters Mrs Keith Hiller Morning Sun, Mrs Clifford Bennett Columbus Junction, Darlene Blankenhorn Columbus Junction. one son Max Wapello. eight grandchildren. two sisters Mrs Thomas Johnson Letts and Mrs E E Shellabarger Columbus Junction. Interment at Pleasant Grove Church of God member. Funeral arrangements pending.
President Eisenhower, aboard the Williamsburg, rededicated himself to the view that government without religious faith makes no sense. He visited Yorktown and Williamsburg and was to receive an honorary degree from William and Mary College.
Columbus Junction town marshal Marvin Teeter sustained serious injuries to his left foot at 11 a.m. Thursday May 14 while mowing a lawn with a power mower at Mrs Grace Robertson’s home in Columbus City. He was hospitalized at the Veterans hospital in Iowa City.
Six year old Patricia told authorities her mother Pauline Foran pushed her and her two brothers into a well before jumping in. Firemen recovered the bodies of Michael aged three and David aged one. Deputy Sheriff Clyde Gable said Patricia was rescued after farmer Robert A Foran lowered himself through a 28 inch opening to the water level. An inquest was planned into the deaths.
Turkish infantrymen repelled a 1500 man Chinese assault on Vegas Hill and adjacent outposts near Seoul, leaving 353 killed or wounded and bringing total Chinese casualties in the last 24 hours to nearly 700. The battle occurred as China fired heavy artillery and mortar rounds, the heaviest since October. The U.S. carrier Boxer returned to Korean waters and launched bombers against North Korea targets on the east coast.
Iowa Production and Marketing Administration sets a goal of 100000 ballots for the upcoming PMA township elections in July. Each township will elect three PMA community committee men two alternate members and a delegate and alternate delegate to the county convention. Ballots mailed to landowners July 16 to 24 with terms starting August 3. Charleston, S. C. emerges as a growing greenheart timber port of entry from British Guiana.
Lt. Gen. William K. Harrison said the Communists misunderstand or misinterpret the Allies plan as negotiations stalled after an 80 minute session. North Korea's Gen. Nam Il stood firm on May 7 eight point proposal, while the Allied 26 point plan remained unacceptable. Both sides agreed to another meeting on Saturday at 11 a.m. Eastern.
London Mirror denounces Senator McCarthy as damn stupid for demanding an apology from former British Prime Minister Clement Attlee. The Daily Mirror defends Attlee’s Commons speech and dismisses McCarthy’s protest as twaddle. Britain stands by Attlee and rejects apologies to McCarthy.
Bruce Walker a 32 year old former Linn County clerk of court deputy pleaded guilty to embezzling more than 1800 dollars. His attorney asked for time to present evidence before sentencing. Walker resigned April 1 and police said he admitted taking funds over about two years. He is held on 2500 dollar bond.
The House Appropriations Committee voted to cut federal spending for health education welfare and labor programs by 132 million dollars below Truman levels and 62 million below Eisenhower estimates. Overall the 1954 budget totals 1.966 billion dollars with deep cuts to Education Health and Labor agencies while public assistance grants remain funded as required by law.
Mrs. Lillian Gookin 80 of Columbus Junction dies at Mt Pleasant Thursday May 14. Services set for May 16 at Stacy Funeral Home with burial in Columbus City cemetery. Born October 15 1872 in Kansas she married Jacob B. Gookin February 21 1906. Survived by son John of Mt. Union several grandchildren and great grandchildren two sisters and one brother. Presbyterian church member.
London reports quote Prime Minister Winston Churchill as saying he will not press for immediate top level talks with Soviet leaders and will not appease them. He spoke with West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and said a secret informal meeting could be possible if the Kremlin shows it means business at the negotiating table. The stance aligns with the Eisenhower administration emphasis on actions over words before negotiating.
Wanda Stice, 16, of Ottumwa, died from injuries after her clothing snagged on a semi trailer and she was dragged along a street. The driver, Keith Baker of Des Moines, said he did not know she was attached and was not held. Programs totaling $106 million more than the Eisenhower plan were urged to be cut back by Undersecretary Morse stating Congress should cut back to the administration's recommended level.
The University of Iowa Board of Publications debated removing editor William Clabby of the Daily Iowan for distorting facts in a campus elections dispute. Board chair Leslie Moeller said further discussion would occur next week as Clabby defends his reporting.
Paris reports officials at Supreme Allied Headquarters say Russia leads the West in jet aircraft quantity and overall development. Jet production began around 1946 with captured German experts aiding Russia and Britain sharing engine prototypes. In service quality and plans both sides are close, but Soviet air forces outnumber Western jets facing Europe.
A California couple Norman Dickerson and Leslie Dickerson were arrested in Muscatine on a bad check complaint. They traveled through eight western and midwest states and are released to Iowa City authorities for prosecution. Authorities estimate they passed four to five thousand dollars in bad checks.
Des Moines chief auditor Arthur G. Nolta, 46, disappeared after leaving work Thursday night. Police dragged the Des Moines River today, finding Nolta’s car with blood on the floor at a bridge edge and a razor blade under a seat.
Mason City Civil Service Commission upholds the dismissal of Patrolman James F. Coyle for alleged pilfering during burglary investigations. Coyle, 68, a former police captain, was fired February 17 by Chief Leo Allstor after a two day hearing. A cafe owner testified Coyle took a sandwich and milkshake while probing a restaurant break in.
