Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson names Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby to direct the WAAC with recruiting starting in about three months. Local offices open in two weeks for candidate applications to the Fort Des Moines training school opening within two months. The WAAC enrollment may reach 25 000 initially and could expand to 150 000 later, with 12 500 women slated for air raid warning service and posts as clerks operators and technicians. Volunteers without officers’ rank would earn 21 dollars monthly, potentially rising to 50 dollars under pending legislation.
Wholesale flour and feed dealers in Des Moines seek a permit from defense transportation director Joseph B. Eastman to operate delivery trucks under a pooling system of consignments to Iowa points. American farmers are achieving the largest agricultural production with minimal outside help. The spring 72 hour work week and rising farm family labor, including women, drive the effort. May 1 employment on farms reached 10,796,000, up 1.3 million from April 1 and 113,000 above May 1, 1941.
Washington May 15 The senate rejected today a Downey proposal to pledge members to waive any special rights privileges or exemptions under gasoline rationing. Senator Sheridan Downey Democrat of California led the measure which sought voluntary limitations on the senators themselves.
Mrs. Hobby wife of former Texas Governor William P Hobby was named head of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps under a congress passed act and a Roosevelt executive order. The move widens women’s military roles amid wartime mobilization and reflects ongoing reorganization of the armed forces.

Funeral services for Mrs Ber tha Baxter were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman's funeral home conducted by Dr F W Eastwood. Pall bearers were Glenn McCall Glenn Mace Will Hemmings George Rudiger Henry Bailey and Theodore Bailey. Burial was in Kim Grove cemetery.
Washington high school students under W. F. Bickel are making model airplanes for the United States Navy Bureau of Aeronautics. Seventy seven students from the high and junior highs are at work, some nightly to meet year end quotas. Fifty planes of the first series have been finished with forty shipped, while nearly fifty second series models are on display. The second series requires sixty percent acceptance by judges for navy use, produced with education bureau cooperation.
