Sioux City state attorneys said they will seek the death penalty for William Boys 35 on trial for the April 24 murder of his wife Betty Boyd 32. He is charged with killing her with a knife. defense argues self defense.
Francis Johnson, president of the Iowa Farm Bureau, resigns from a special chemurgic conference committee after the American Farm Bureau withdraws from participation. He cited conditions for recognizing Chemurgic Council as a cooperating organization following alleged statements by council members. A separate note from Highlandville reports a watch lost in a haymow last summer cost a cow’s life after the animal swallowed it.
In Dumont the F. Roder family hoped Miriam, 14, would return from Warm Springs to heal from paralysis. That night Miriam’s brother Lowell, 11, died after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a .22 rifle. Dr. C. F. Roder, a Battery County physician, rushed from Des Moines to be with his son as he died.
Cheroker James MebDon Ald regains mayoralty after notifying appeal and posting bond to cover new trial costs and salary. City Attorney John Loughlin notes McDonald's original certificate of election remains valid as the district court plans to convene in September.
A state planning board survey of 2,512 homesteads in Marengo Iowa county shows an average value of 1511 dollars. The 1,009 town properties average 1201 dollars each and 1,503 rural homesteads average 1838 dollars. Data drawn from 194% tax assessment records.
Crawfordsville May 14 Rev Donald E Zimmerman pastor of the United Presbyterian church says he has not yet made a definite decision on a pastoral call extended by the United Presbyterian church at Alliance Ohio. He recently preached at the Alliance church while in the cast for a visit at his former home at Whittaker Pa.
Thousands of Jones & Laughlin and Pittsburgh Steel workers end a 36 hour strike as Philip Murray and H. E. Lewis arrange a May 20 election under the Wagner act. Returning to the 3 PM shift, workers gauge union bargaining rights if victory is achieved.
President Roosevelt returned to Washington after a 17 day Gulf of Mexico fishing trip and again assumed control of leadership as congressional bills stalled, reshaping the White House approach to legislation.
J. McKay, popular station agent for the B. and Q. in Washington, retires under the company pension after forty five years with the railroad. He began as helper in Pekin Iowa in 1862 then served at Packwood and Pleasantville before returning to Washington sixteen years ago to close his career. Mr. McKay and Mrs. McKay plan to remain in Washington as permanent residents. Harold Graham, Crawfordsville, now relieves at the QO office.
Washington May 14 The president's 1.5 billion relief program faces cutbacks. WPA administrator Hopkins told House subcommittee that 525000 workers may lose WPA jobs in the next year and private industry must absorb the gap. He warned the fund may not last a full year. He noted unemployment could reach 7 to 10 million nationwide and that wage levels may rise due to living costs.
The Methodist church celebrated burning its mortgage at a Wednesday night dinner meeting. Dr. Arthur Atack presided as O F Sehmitt led the mortgage reveal with Mrs O E Sehmitt assisting. Frank L. Wilson outlined the church finances highlighting the Ladies Aid and the Centenary fund contributions.
Des Moines May 14 INS A 22 percent increase in deposits in Iowa's 542 banks over the last year was reported by D W Bates state superintendent of banking. The March 31 total stood at 837 FSS8 9T4 168 with a year end comparison and $14 028 751 of the rise occurring Jan 1 to Mar 1. Capital stocks totaled 23 401 759 and surplus funds were up 1 257 168 from a year ago.
Dick Merrill and Jack Lambie completed a round trip to England landing at Floyd Bennett Field this afternoon after a stop near Quincy Massachusetts to check gasoline supply. They departed Southport England yesterday afternoon.
Postmaster M Co DeLong announced bids will be received until May 25 for Washington post office repairs. work includes exterior painting floor repair in work room repainting stone work and painting flag pole with gold leaf on the ball atop the pole.
A meeting in Ottumwa drew fifty county officials from 17 southeastern Iowa counties. President J Forest Embree of Sigourney presided. A W Hinderman of Wapello urged the federal government to trust local authorities in project selection and relief efforts.
The meeting featured R L Grimes and G W Manussier on trumpet, Mrs R A Hender on piano and a lively eight hand piano piece by Mrs Ab Anderson and others. A high school boys quartet with Helen Coffey performed to the crowd, following a pot-luck dinner. O E Schmitt presented an extra $100 to the Ladies Aid treasury, boosting the fund beyond the goal.
Senator Claire Dewey spoke to the Washington Chamber of Commerce about Iowa’s homestead tax refund bill. He described credits and the need for formal application to qualify, noting $7.5 million for old age relief and about $11 million to be refunded to homestead owners. The talk covered legislative workload and other key bills of the session.
No objectors appeared at ten o clock for objections to a county road program approved by the board of supervisors. After formalities the board will open bids this afternoon for contracts on bridging grading and resurfacing of county highways. A large group of bidders from the area gathered at the courthouse and competition is expected to keep costs reasonable. Mr and Mrs Dale Frame of Columbus Junction visited town.
London reports the British destroyer Hunter was crippled by an explosion near Almeria while on patrol under non intervention terms. Eight lives were lost and 14 seamen injured. The government plans a protest only if investigations reveal definite grounds. Hardy and Hyperion were sent to Almeria to assist and confer with Hunter’s commander.
About 65 members from most Washington county towns attended the Brighton Legion meeting. County leaders lauded over-quota achievements, awarded silver and gold stars, and announced the next county gathering in Wellman on June 17 for Legion Auxiliary and families.
