Lions Club awards four students for most improved

Four elementary band students in the Washington Community School District received Most Improved awards at a Tuesday evening concert. Fred Stark directed the program, and the Washington Lions Club presented the honors through officer Dick Burroughs. Recipients were Kirk Dunbar of Brighton Donna Gardner of Lincoln Jody Bryan of Stewart and Larry Drayfahl of St James.

University students injured in Iowa plane crash

Perry Grimes and Julia Fitzgibbons, both University of Iowa students, were in good condition and David Smith of Grinnell was in fair condition after a Piper Cherokee single engine airplane piloted by Smith crashed during an attempted emergency landing two miles north of Iowa City around 8 15 p m. Authorities and FAA planned investigations.

Humboldt sheriff and deputy win $600,000 harassment case

In Fort Dodge Iowa a U S District Court jury ruled for Humboldt County Sheriff Marvin Anderson and Deputy Richard Jurgens in a $600 000 harassment lawsuit filed by Fireside Inn operators of Humboldt The suit claimed the officials harassed the tavern after a briefcase with 70000 in counterfeit money was found on the premises The operators sought 607000 in damages

First woman to join Iowa district court bench

Gov. Robert D. Ray named Margaret Stevenson of Bettendorf as the first woman to serve on an Iowa district court bench in Judicial District 7 serving Cedar Clinton Jackson Muscatine and Scott counties. She is Davenport city corporation counsel and former Bettendorf and Scott County mental health center director. Ray also appointed Harold Swailes of Belle Plaine to District 6 bench covering Benton Iowa Johnson Jones Linn and Tama counties.

Gas tax increase moves to Senate debate

In Des Moines the Senate Transportation Committee advanced a reduced gasoline tax plan to Ways and Means, aiming for full Senate consideration before adjournment. The panel backed a 1.5 cent gas tax and 2 cent diesel hike, netting $11.8 million for the Road Use Tax Fund and offsetting allocations to state, counties, and cities.

Senate OKs partial Iowa property tax reform bill

The Senate approved a tax package by 40 to 7 sending it to the House. It shifts farm land assessment to productivity, delays permanent tax decisions for two years, and includes a $200,000 task force, a freeze on capitalization rates, a 7.5 percent cap on valuation increases, continued tax credits, a one year freeze on personal property tax phaseout, and added school aid. House Democrats plan to take up the measure next week before adjournment.

Crash on 218 Hospitalizes Three In Riverside Crash

Three people were hospitalized after a collision on a highway 218 bridge near Riverside. Everett Rath, 63, of Riverside. Timothy Binder of Burlington. and an unidentified man were taken to hospitals. The crash blocked traffic for about 2.5 hours. Cavitt's northbound rig drove away uninjured. A trapped man was freed by the Washington County Rescue Unit using hydraulic jaws. The incident is under investigation with charges pending.

Fewer jobless in the county

Washington County sees unemployment drop to 3.3 percent in March with 300 unemployed out of 8,930 in the labor force, down from 390 unemployed and 8,740 workers in February. The Job Service Iowa report notes most unemployed are new entrants, re-entrants, or those who quit to seek other jobs, with few chronically jobless.

Carter signs $4 billion public works jobs bill in Rose Garden

President Carter signed a public works bill to create 600,000 jobs and a separate measure authorizing 20 billion dollars in revenue sharing funds. He cited progress toward recovery while acknowledging a long road ahead, noting 300,000 construction jobs and 300,000 related jobs. The event drew Mondale Meany Kreps who highlighted libraries and city halls as beneficiaries.
