United Press wartime reporter Gene Symonds died in a Singapore hospital after a mob beat him during Communist riot clashes. He was dragged from a taxi at a government roadblock and struck with stones and sticks until unconscious. Symonds, 29, of Dayton Ohio, covered the riots and suffered a fractured skull.
