SPECIAL TO EVENING JOURNAL Chicago May 12 report notes San Juan surrender at six, Admiral Sampson reports heavy Spanish losses and minor U.S. damage. Casualties include Seaman Widemark killed. seven wounded. Simultaneous dispatches cover Cape Verde fleet sighting, New York crew, expedition landings at Cabanos, and volunteer mobilization across states.
At Chickamauga Park the vast movement of units continues with regiments leaving for Tampa and the Philippines. General Brooke’s army shrinks toward Manila while horses and mules are readied. Major General Merritt and General Otis named to military govern Philippines with 12 000 troops planned.
Camp summaries from Illinois and Wisconsin detail Third and Fifth regiments remaining at camp with transport contracts awarded and shelter tents provided. General Fitzsimons receives brigadier nomination and plans to head south. Supplies arrive for the First Infantry and other units as mustering and examinations proceed in Des Moines and Camp Harvey.
Martinsville Indiana May 15 George Weidner Owensville Ohio sagt Dove shot him at Lee Doves dry goods store. He claims Dove destroyed his business and family. Marshal finds him with revolver and five unloaded shells. Five cartridges found in vest pocket.
Nine per cent of amputation cases are fatal. Japanese coins are iron while Siamese coins are porcelain. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Tott and a six year old daughter of John Pollish perished in a Minersville fire. Senate in executive session confirmed most military nominations on Tuesday May 10 with two exceptions. The Y M C A of Chicago marks its fortieth anniversary with observances. Dalton McCarthy QC MP a top Canadian statesman died in Toronto. W E Williams won reelection to Congress in the Fourteenth Travis district on the 348th ballot by a slim margin. The British steamer Ironopolis reached Port Royal Jamaica with coal after an unsuccessful blockade ram at Havana.
A May 1 dispatch from Admiral Dewey at Manila notes limited gains since the last telegram and reports the Concord sinking a Spanish gunboat at Iloilo while the Boston patrols. London reports German and French protests against U.S. Philippines occupation, but officials deny coordinated continental action.
Washington May 13 George Downing alias Rawlings the man arrested last Sunday on suspicion of spying for Spain hanged himself in his Washington barracks cell. A towel and silk handkerchief were his instruments. Downing 33 English born and formerly a Brooklyn yeoman faced earlier suspicion over loyalty and clashes with shipmates. He reportedly aided Spanish attaches and delivered information to a contact in Toronto before interception of a Montreal letter promised further details.
